I mean, Luis Castillo hadn't been very good all year, so I don't think that game Sunday was necessarily that big a surprise, although he didn't pitch that bad.
But, man, M's fans never did think that they were going to get swept. I mean, they thought this was two out of three minimum, and maybe a sweep for the Mariners, right? Like, how big of a setback is this for that club?
Well, it's not really a setback. It's early May, obviously. But the problem right now that we're dealing with is what you said. It's Luis Castillo. I mean, the guy's put on 52 base runners in his last 28 innings pitched, which is just way, way too many for a guy of Luis Castillo's caliber. And here's the thing that's going on up here in Seattle, man.
So, as you know, and as you saw on Saturday, Emerson Hancock, who's been filling in for Bryce Miller because Bryce began the year on the injured list,

Chapter 4: What are the implications of Luis Castillo's performance for the Mariners?
He's not going anywhere. He had 14 strikeouts on Saturday. He's been amazing in every game he's pitched for the most part this year. They can't do anything with Hancock besides leave him in the rotation. So the question is, when Bryce Miller is healthy, which he's a couple weeks away from being ready to pitch... What do you do, right?
And Emerson Hancock could have made it really easy by pitching terribly and getting sent back down to AAA Tacoma, but he's not pitching terribly. So I think Luis Castillo, you know, a phantom IL stint at some point, make up an injury, whatever. He's got a groin. He's got an oblique. He's got something in his elbow, blah, blah, blah, some discomfort in his hip, yackety-yack.
They'll make something up for Luis Castillo and probably get him out of here for a couple weeks because he needs to be shut down. He is not himself at all.
Yeah, how long until we're talking about Cade Anderson being the guy that they turn to? He's in AA. Yeah. 38 strikeouts in 24 innings, only 13 hits allowed, only four walks. 38 Ks, four walks, only 13 hits in 24 and a third innings. 21 years old, like how long before he's the answer that Mariners fans are calling for?
Well, I think likely what's going to happen if they have another injury in their rotation, I think Kate Anderson is going to be next up.

Chapter 5: How are the Mariners handling their pitching rotation challenges?
I mean, if Luis Castillo is honestly dealing with something and has to be shut down for a while or is on the IL, there's a chance that Kate Anderson is next up in this rotation. And if you look at Jerry DiPoto, As the GM and president of baseball ops with this team, Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Brian Wu, he's had a bunch of guys that have made the jump straight from AA to the major leagues.
So Kate Anderson doesn't necessarily need to stop in Tacoma. He doesn't need to make a stop in AAA. He can make the jump right from AA to the major leagues. I mean, he's an older guy. He pitched in college at LSU. We're not talking about a 19-year-old kid who's straight out of high school. He's a college pitcher. So he's a lot closer to being ready. So I would say he's probably next up.
And I'd be pretty surprised, to be honest with you, Soren, if we did not see Kate Anderson at the major league level this year, if not before the All-Star break.
All right, where do we sit? There for a while, it seemed like we were about ready to see them call up Colt Emerson to play shortstop, only 20 years old. Another one of their top prospects, J.P. Crawford, and not really playing that great. How close are we to seeing Colt Emerson be in the everyday shortstop for the Ams?
Yeah, I mean, we might be a few weeks away. I mean, look, a lot of that depends on need. And, you know, they don't claim they really need anybody right now because they've got J.P. Crawford. I think Mariner fans are ready to see somebody else at shortstop, at least defensively, than J.P. Crawford. I mean, this is not a very good defensive baseball team. And the gap that you saw from J.P.
over the weekend is kind of maybe a little bit of a microcosm and the epitome of why. They're not very good. So, you know, the one thing the Mariners aren't going to do is rush this guy, right? Like the days of rushing prospects up to the big leagues like they did under Jack Zarensik and Bill Bavesi back in the day, those days are over. You know, I mean, Colt Emerson's playing okay.
He's not playing great in AAA. Doesn't need to play great in AAA, but they've got to combine ā I think his readiness with a place to play every day, they're not bringing him up, Seren, to sit on the bench and rot. When they bring him up, he's playing, and he's playing five or six days a week. Jerry DiPoto has said so.
that when they bring him up, he's going to be here for a month, month and a half, two months to play every single day and really dip his toe and his foot into the Major League water. So if there's not a place for him to do that on an everyday basis, I would say don't do it. When there is an opportunity, you'll see Colin Emerson up here in Seattle very soon.

So, you know, I didn't expect for him to be available unless the Bears wanted to move up and go and get him. But... It is interesting, the Bears draft. Obviously, Thineman, defensive player in the first round.

Chapter 7: What is the current status of the Philadelphia 76ers in the playoffs?
Dobbins went out, and he's still in the fold, too. That he is the number one guy. It hasn't happened. The Broncos think it could still happen. I'm not so sure. I think there are a lot of people in Denver that aren't so sure either. If I had to pick the guy who's the guy right now, I would go J.K. Dobbins. And then I think Harvey is your change of pace. And Coleman is a bit of a wild card.
They love his inside toughness. He's not going to beat anybody in the 40-yard dash who plays cornerback, most likely. But he still has enough wiggle and enough quick to break a 40- or 50-yard run. So I think it's a better mix. And they're still looking for that guy, Seren. And Dobbins was on his way to being that guy, but... As has happened in his career, the injury bug bit him again last year.
He was on a terrific pace, though, through 10 games.
Yeah, I'm sure he'll be healthy this year. You know, this is the year. Go all in on him this year. All right, the Nuggets out at the hands of the Timberwolves. This is a styles makes fights kind of matchup between these two teams. And the Timberwolves always seem to give them problems. And I get it. And I understand the Nuggets former, you know, personnel guys running the show.
And everybody says, well, he built the, you know, Timberwolves to just beat the Nuggets and all that. Okay, fine. That's great. That makes for great storylines. But come on. I mean, you've got arguably the greatest player in the NBA year in, year out. I know he didn't win the MVP last year. Might not. Probably not going to win it this year. But he is unbelievable.
Are the Nuggets squandering the best years of the Joker?
Yes. Bold, underlined, and three exclamation points. And it leaves me shaking my head, quite honestly, Surin. What happened in the Minnesota series... is inexcusable in my mind. It really is. I mean, you think about game six, and the Nuggets can't even score 100 points against the Timberwolves team that doesn't have its top three guards. I mean, it's mind-blowing.
And then Jamal Murray, after the game, says, yeah, they wanted it more, and we're going to have to want it more next year. And I'm sorry for a team that had championship aspirations by their own words before the season. That should not happen. So I think you're completely, and this is just my take, I'll push back a little bit on just sort of dismissing the Tim Connolly factor.
This is a Minnesota team that punked the Nuggets, that has done that in recent years. Go back two years ago when they're trying to defend a championship and the Nuggets blow a 20-point lead to this team on their home floor in Game 7. The Nuggets have a lot of questions to answer.

He's going to AAA, which means we'll know the velocity. We know that was one of the big things all spring. Last spring and this spring. Now, the velocity came around last year.
We'll see if it's coming around because we'll see some reports on what the velocity is at AAA. That's of note. Should make you feel maybe a little better. Yeah. Makes you feel better because, you know. They're not trying to hide something and then trade him for nothing, you know, out the back door. They're sending him out for what appears to be a quite legit rehab assignment.
