24.158 - 41.753 Host

Still to come, some red-hot Royals talk with David Leske from inside the crown. We'll get his thoughts on whether or not this ball club has turned the corner and what to expect on this six-game road trip. First, though. We start with the things you need to know. Yes. Not playing around anymore. No.

0

42.134 - 43.475 Unknown

These are things you need to know, people.

0

44.597 - 53.168 Host

Get your head around it, okay? I'll start with little Matt Cotrero when he was asked how the winning here of late has affected their mindset.

0

53.669 - 77.271 Matt Quattrero

I mean, they're playing with confidence. You know what I mean? It was a different atmosphere today. Game time was different. The crowd was different. The weather was different. And the guys in the dugout, they were never out of that game. 2-0, 6-0. I can promise you, they were into every pitch. And it just felt like we were going to get going. And they did.

77.652 - 97.517 Host

They eventually did. Did you keep watching? Yes. I did, too, because I thought, well, there's a chance. You know, I thought this could take off here. And they kept scoring. They kept, you know, nibbling away, nibbling away. Hated it when they were leaking runs on the other side. But I'm like, yeah, but they keep getting, you know.

97.698 - 100.542 Unknown

And once it got to 6-3, I'm like, all right, I'm into the end.

100.673 - 104.488 Host

Yeah, and now they need to keep that going.

105.292 - 107.019 Unknown

Now they need some starting pitching.

Chapter 2: What insights does David Lesky provide about the Royals' recent performance?

107.32 - 112.614 Unknown

Let's beat a little bit better team on the road. Let's beat anybody on the road.

0

112.935 - 122.069 Host

Keep it going. I would take a one-run win against Buttermaker and the Bad News Bears. Yes. Right now, on the road.

0

122.089 - 123.151 Curtis Seabolt

Or Frank's Sacramento Bees.

0

123.632 - 128.399 Host

The Sacramento Bees that he has relocated from Salt Lake.

0

128.64 - 133.127 Unknown

And then they can go up to Seattle and beat the Post-Intelligencer.

133.985 - 138.531 Host

That is what he got. He was not like, no, the newspaper in Sacramento is the Sacramento Bee.

138.872 - 139.052 Unknown

Yeah.

139.613 - 143.538 Host

Do we have history, though? Did anybody look up? Is there a history of a baseball team?

144.139 - 152.11 Unknown

Someone hit me on Twitter, said the Oakland Bees is a minor league team for somebody.

Chapter 3: How does winning impact the Royals' team mentality?

779.393 - 779.513 Unknown

Sure.

0

780.114 - 784.941 Host

Charles and the cab driver.

0

786.322 - 794.633 Unknown

This makes sense if you're old. Do you know who the Phillies general manager is? Dave Dombrowski. It says here it's Preston Mattingly.

0

794.893 - 797.076 Host

Well, why does the story you gave me say Dave Dombrowski?

0

797.096 - 800.54 Unknown

I think maybe he's above them. President of Baseball Ops.

800.56 - 807.049 Host

Yes, yes. You know what that is? You know what that basically is? What? He's generally in charge of managing all the baseball.

807.169 - 812.616 Unknown

Yes. Good enough. I think it's wild that Don Mattingly's kid is the GM.

812.596 - 814.238 Host

This is... Is that right?

814.398 - 817.222 Unknown

Yes, that's why I said that. What's his name? Preston Mattingly.

Chapter 4: What are the implications of Bobby Witt Jr.'s first home run?

981.801 - 1003.583 Unknown

It's the color of the jersey. Maybe he does better in green. That's brutal. It's brutal. Would you have thought this guy, I mean, it was barely 10 years ago, a little more than 10 years ago, he was coming off back-to-back Super Bowl appearances and was a yard away from back-to-back championships. Could you imagine that Russell Wilson would be here at this point of his career?

0

1004.023 - 1008.388 Host

No, I wouldn't have thought it's going like this. I would have thought he stayed in Seattle.

0

1008.408 - 1010.17 Unknown

It's been weird for a little while.

0

1010.39 - 1013.253 Host

It's another reason why I would make sure Pat's happy.

0

1013.694 - 1013.914 Unknown

Yeah.

1014.314 - 1037.665 Host

Right? But I mean, he is a 5'10 quarterback, so when the feet go... Yeah, that's a good point. It's a cautionary tale. Listen, I know we all think Mahomes is going to play at a high level of 38, 39, 40. We're not asking for 44 like Tom Brady, but we think it's going to be close to 40. I'm not – I mean, I hope so. I think he's definitely better than Donovan McNabb ever was.

1038.025 - 1040.869 Host

But there are a number of quarterbacks that when they couldn't evade, they couldn't win.

1041.309 - 1059.838 Unknown

This is going to be a big year. You can, I think, project out quite a bit, potentially project out quite a bit of what the next five years are by his mobility this year, or at least next year. Maybe there's a little bit the first time back. By the end of the season, you're going to know what the – A lot, to a great degree, I think, what the next five years are going to be.

1060.039 - 1082.165 Host

There's really no news in this next story I'm about to read to you, but I just like where it's going. Okay. And so I'm going to continue to put this out there. When others write about it, then I'm going to act like it's news. The NCAA has initiated the final steps. Ooh. What does that mean? I mean, are we renting out buildings? It means another month. It sounds like a threat.

Chapter 5: How does Matt Quattrero view Bobby Witt's development?

1274.757 - 1289.311 David Lesky

There's nothing worse than an off day after a loss. I mean, I know that there are some days that you're like, yeah, I can't watch this team. And so the off day is good. But an off day after a loss, especially if it's a bad one, it's brutal. Absolutely brutal.

0

1289.471 - 1308.526 Host

Well, they also got, what, cooperation from the Guardians. The Tigers were off, but the Guardians played and they lost. Yeah. So they picked up a half game on the Guardians. They're right back in it. Now they're just three back and three and a half back on the Tigers. The Tigers are the one that's the scary one, in my opinion.

0

1308.546 - 1309.108 David Lesky

Right, I agreed.

0

1309.929 - 1333.722 Host

But, yeah, I mean, I do... You know, when I asked the question, well, do they turn the corner? Nobody wants to answer because nobody wants to be wrong. Right? I asked him, and what did you say? Well, I guess we'll know. I'm like, I know. But if they win six out of seven, or let's say they go, what do we do? They got seven when they come home against a tough one and six or so.

0

1333.742 - 1337.767 Host

So if they go like 10 and three, we will definitely say that this was, they had turned the corner.

1338.087 - 1342.913 David Lesky

But that doesn't, you're not going out on a limb there. Let's go out on a limb right now.

1342.893 - 1343.834 Host

13-0?

1343.854 - 1349.681 David Lesky

No, I want Curtis to give an answer. I don't want a we'll see. I want it right now. Yes or no?

1350.041 - 1367.742 Host

Have they turned the corner? No. You don't think so? Not yet. Not yet as in you're just not ready to say that? Or you really don't think you've seen enough that they're playing better? So are you predicting them to go what in the next 13 then? Would be what?

Chapter 6: What are the expectations for the Royals' upcoming road trip?

1796.712 - 1814.997 David Lesky

And they've overcome bad losses, too. They came back from the loss on Monday that was ugly, so ugly, and won on Tuesday. They came back from that blow-up the first series of the year when Estevez gave up the home run. They won the next day. There's some fortitude with that. And I don't think they get enough credit for it. Yeah, I agree.

0

1815.638 - 1828.402 Host

And I think, are you ready to say that Caglione's ready to start blossoming into the player? You know, a guy that... isn't just surviving with his batting average, but is thriving with hitting the ball hard.

0

1828.723 - 1850.147 David Lesky

He's hitting the ball hard. He's hitting the ball over the wall a little bit now. So that's what I wanted to see next. I wanted to see him pull the ball. There was a stretch. We didn't really talk about this. There was a stretch when he had, like, 12 of 14 batted balls were not pulled over a 10-day period or something like that. And that's concerning because that's where you get your power.

0

1850.508 - 1864.026 David Lesky

I mean, he's able to hit the ball out of the park foul pull to foul pull. No doubt. The strength is there. But you're going to get – the bulk of your home runs are going to be pulled. Right.

0

1864.767 - 1865.848 Host

Unless you're Danny Tarnable.

1866.269 - 1895.215 David Lesky

Yes, unless you're Danny Tarnable, which – Maybe he is. I don't know. He's not. They're very strong. They're both very strong men. But, yeah, you've got to pull the ball. And he wasn't doing it. Now he is. I'm much more hesitant on Caglione than I am on even saying the Royals have turned the corner. Really? Yeah, it's just I struggle with the pitch selection.

1896.157 - 1903.208 David Lesky

And I worry that there are times that it's just going to be ugly for two weeks.

1904.209 - 1926.282 Host

But I think that's interesting because part of it is like, are we projecting when he was putting up the amazing numbers in the minor leagues, he went from being a guy that when they drafted him, everybody agreed he's too much of a free swinger, swings at bad balls, but immense power. So I think when the Royals drafted him, It was like, oh.

1926.683 - 1949.624 Host

30 to 40 homers, 240, you know, 305, you know, that's probably what he is. I'm hoping he'll be better. I'm hoping he becomes more. And then when he had the monster numbers in the minor leagues, he became more in our head. Yeah. And so now we're not willing to say he's turning the corner because now we're waiting for it to look like he's going to be 40. He's going to be Freddie Freeman. Right.
