What recent upgrades did Red Bull introduce in Austria?
On today's episode, Gary delves into Red Bull's transformative upgrade package and looks at Cadillac's break-over heating troubles. We hear from F1 test driver Joe Guan Yu and also take your questions on the limits of the power unit, straight-line mode and gear ratios. welcome to the race f1 tech show i'm ed straw and of course the main man is with me gary anderson former f1 technical director with half a century experience in and around formula one which means he's definitely forgotten more than probably most of us will ever know about racing cars gary we've got silverstone coming up it's not a huge distance away from uh from where you live either No, it's 20 minutes up the road, really. But yeah, it's a good race.
It's an interesting race because it's a real circuit, I suppose you might call it. It's got good fast corners through the Beckett's Complex, the Copse. Yeah, it's one of those circuits where a driver can contribute towards the performance of the car. And there's many different ways. If you take that complex, as I say, Beckett's complex, you go into there flat out and at each corner you go through there, you sort of come down a gear or you slow down a little bit. So it's an interesting complex. It'll be an area where I think you could use, you could do quite a bit of harvesting through there because you are slowing as you go through it. We haven't really pinpointed a great harvesting or deployment strategy difference from other cars.
We saw a bit of it in Austria, I think, where you get somebody overtaken into Turn 3 and then being overtaken again into Turn 4. But I think we'll see more of a discrepancy at Silverstone for sure because it's not going to be easy to have the power. You've got too many straights there basically for it and not really enough time, enough braking time, to get the battery up to spec.
What are the reasons behind Cadillac's brake overheating issues?
So it could be one of those situations where it's going to be down to a bit of passing and re-overtaking again. Yeah, an interesting test for these new cars, particularly the power units for Silverstone. Max Verstappen was certainly quite disparaging about the energy regime, though. He said he was basically laughing when he drove it in the simulator. So it's going to be something to look out for during Friday practice in particular. Talking Max Verstappen, should we talk about the Red Bull upgrades, a major upgrade package that allowed Max Verstappen to challenge for victory in the Austrian Grand Prix? I think if he'd been able to get track position, probably he would have won it. You did an interesting piece that ran on the race website on Saturday morning that was picking out, well, going through the changes.
And there were several bits where it was very clear, based on your analysis, of quite different objectives in terms of what they were trying to achieve with the airflow on it. So this one does come under the heading of significant upgrade insofar as not only were they just putting load on making it better, they were trying to achieve slightly different things. Yeah, I mean, it's always difficult because as I always say, whenever you come up with the concept of a car, you don't start with a rectangular block or a cube of modelling foam. You start with a concept and you follow that concept and you optimise that concept, you develop that concept and you get the best out of it.
How did Zhou Guanyu's tyre testing experience go?
But Was it the right sort of package to start with? Or is there a better solution to manage the airflow through the car? And before you can really realize that, you need to probably see what a few others have done, I suppose is the right way to put it.
What insights did Zhou Guanyu share about the 2026 Cadillac developments?
because you don't the people coming up with the concept you've probably got 200 people optimizing it but you've probably got three or four people that are actually sitting down and trying to sort of get the picture in their head where they're trying to get to what they're trying to achieve um so before you can change your mind you've really got to see some reason for doing it now we don't know all the reasons obviously there was side pod changes let's say as one of the biggest things the the shape of the side pod and how they were
