How do you find motivation to Start all over again. When you spent over five years following the brandy plan and then life comes along with the tragedy and throws you right back to step one when you're about to start step five. How do you ask your family to keep doing the same thing over and over again?
Oh no. Well, James, I'm sorry. What what happened that caused you to go all the way from step five back to step one? That sounds terrible.
Yeah, it was about to start step five. Um my wife lost a job unexpectedly about ten months ago. I was outside on the phone talking to her and a car swerved off the road and hit me as a hit and run and hurt me. So I was out of work for about seven months and then she was out of work too. Uh now we're both I went back to work at AMA a few months ago. And I'm back to work and she's back to work and But between the bills and while I was out, she went back into debt a little bit. Not too bad, but hospital bills now that I'm completely stuck with because of the hit and run.
Mhm.
So how do I ask her to keep tightening their belt? I'm fifty three years old and I've got twenty thousand dollars in my four hundred one K. That's it.
Okay. Well I I hate that this h I mean, that is such a a freak accident that you would be standing on the phone talking to her and a car would hit you. I mean, I I hate that that happened. I'm so sorry. Um, you were out for seven months. During that time you guys ate through your emergency fund and then some. Oh
yeah.
And so now you're starting back. Um, is it just the twenty thousand of debt?
That's not my debt, that's my four oh one K.
How does James describe his accident and its impact on his finances?
That's a four oh one K.
Okay, how much debt?
Yeah, that's uh uh the debt now we've got about seven thousand in consumer debt when it was at zero.
Okay.
Plus uh the last I looked at sixty thousand in hospital bills that the insurance didn't pay for.
Okay.
Why
didn't they pay for it?
My insurance. Uh, 'cause my insurance is not as good as some people's they paid a percentage, but I'm still on the hook for twenty percent.
And there was no Macs out of pocket?
Uh no uh I I don't know exactly what it is, to be honest with you, but it's somewhere in the neighborhood of fifty K, the max out of pocket. It's not the best insurance there in the world.
It's
uh through an employer. Um, and like I said, I went back to work early. I wasn't supposed to, but I had to. Now originally we was making We got out of debt, I guess it was like a hundred and sixty two thousand, something like that. Uhhuh. And we spent about five years doing it. I talked to y'all once four last year and I was close. I was talking to you about the national debt relief, dump them and pay it myself and I did. Good. And I kept my car like you told me to do. You said I could afford it, my yellow jacket. But then a few months after that, uh had all it paid off and was pounding the emergency fund and I was almost at twenty five K and then this happened. And now we're right back to step one. I'm so, so sorry.
Um I mean I only have ten dollars in the bank.
But you're back work you're back working. Are you back doing the same job that you were doing?
Yes, I didn't lose my job. Uh originally uh we were making about a hundred and thirty five. Okay. What are you making now? Now we're gonna be making uh what I wrote down. See, with my overtime that I pushed and everything and to her new job, which doesn't make make as much, we're gonna get about a hundred and eleven with her job.
Okay. So the good news, I I I hear what you're saying and I gosh, I George and I are right there with you, but I really want to shift the conversation to what's going good because a lot of bad a lot of bad happened exactly.
