And welcome to another episode of the Real Estate Podcast, available on iHeartRadio and also Spotify and Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcast from. Well, it's Tuesday, the 26th. 6th of April for 2022. Hope you had a great long weekend. Another short week coming up and I've got a great discussion on its way in just a moment and we're going to be talking about buying an Italian home for just $1 where you can head off this morning to this town, buy yourself a coffee and then purchase a house afterwards which is less than the coffee that you just had. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Right, let's have a look at the weather forecast.
It's the main centre forecast with propertybuyer.com.au.
And in Sydney, expecting some showers today, a high of 23 degrees. Melbourne, partly cloudy with 22. Brisbane, periods of rain today with 24 degrees. And in Perth, expecting showers to increase and a high of 22 degrees.
Across every state, city and town of Australia, The Real Estate Podcast.
Well, he said he was going to do it. People thought he was joking, but now it's a reality with Elon Musk buying Twitter for $44 billion, giving him personal control of one of the most influential social platforms on the planet. He said afterwards that free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy and Twitter is the digital town square where the future of humanity are debated. And went on to say that he wants to make Twitter better by enhancing the product with new features. Of course, now it's a case of let's wait and see. Will he allow Donald Trump back onto the platform?
We feature market updates, interviews and trends. It's your real estate podcast for breakfast.
Well, imagine while living abroad that you discover a village in Italy with run-down houses where the population of younger people have moved away from the area to secure jobs and these homes just sit there idle doing nothing. But then the council decides to sell the properties for one dollar or one euro to be precise in the hope that people will reno them and bring them back to life and at the same time bring back some fresh young people into the village all paying taxes and rejuvenate the macro local economy. Well it sounded pretty good to Aussie expat Danny McCubbin who joins us this morning from Italy. A very good morning to you, Danny, and welcome to the Real Estate Podcast. I know that it is late in the evening where you are.
It certainly is. Thanks so much, Craig, for inviting me to chat to you. Yeah, it's about 10.30 here in Italy, and just good to be chatting to an Aussie and connecting with everyone back home.
Yeah, well, tell us a little bit about your backstory because you left many years ago. You're from Queensland and you're a chef that ended up working with Jamie Oliver in London for about 17 years. So tell us a little bit about that.
Sure thing, Craig. I think you got three out of four things right. Yeah, I'm from Queensland. I left many years ago, went backpacking really, 1998 it was. Like many Aussies, I thought I would just spend a couple of years away and go back to Oz. Ended up loving London, loving living in in that country and having access to Europe. Grandparents were from Scotland and England. I ended up, yeah, getting a job with Jamie in 2003. But a lot of people think I'm a chef because obviously, you know, I'm now connected with food here in Italy with what I do. However, I worked on all Jamie's food campaigns. So I helped set up 15, the social enterprise restaurant and I was his PA for four years and worked in various departments, but always working on social projects with food, so supporting Jamie with his campaigns.
Okay, so that sounds pretty exciting. Now, let's fast forward. This Italy housing scheme, tell us how you came across this.
Sure thing, Craig. So I've had a long love for Italy for many years. I've been volunteering for a community out here called San Patrignano, very connected with Italy through 15.
