Five years ago, I was that guy. The one checking Slack at 11 p.m. The one who felt guilty taking a lunch break. The one who thought grinding harder was the answer to everything. And frankly, I was miserable. The grind isn't just failing us. It's actively destroying our ability to be successful.
And I'm about to show you why using something I call the peak framework. But first, let me tell you about the lie that almost broke me. Hi, my name's Ryan Hanley, and while everyone else is telling you to find balance, I'm here to tell you that's bullshit. Three years ago, I was the poster child for entrepreneurial chaos.
Great ideas, terrible execution, chasing every opportunity like a squirrel on Red Bull. Then I stopped fighting my ADHD and started weaponizing it. Built and sold a seven-figure company, hit number two in all of Apple podcasts, and I've done more than 50 keynotes in that time. Here's what the productivity gurus won't tell you. Your brain isn't broken. The system you're using is.
Your overwhelm is actually your edge. You just need to stop apologizing for it and start leveraging it. That's what we do here at Finding Peak. All right, so the myth that almost broke me. You know that feeling when you're scrolling through LinkedIn and everyone's posting about their hustle, their 5 a.m. workouts, their 16 hour days, their blessed to be grinding posts, all that hustle porn.
Yeah, I bought into that shit hard. I thought successful meant being busy. I thought it meant saying yes to everything. I thought rest was for the weak. And it led to three warning signs that I ignored until it was almost too late. And I'm going to share those with you in a second. But first, I learned something important. The problem isn't ambitious. Shit, I'm ambitious as hell.
The problem is we've confused motion, activity with progress and impact. We've confused being busy with being effective. And this is where the P comes in and peak. It stands for presence. When you're constantly thinking about the next thing, the next goal, the next achievement, you're never actually here, like right here. And if you're not here, you're not making real decisions.
You're just reacting. You're not operating in reality. Those three warning signs I mentioned, well, the first, you feel guilty when you're not working. And I know many of you have felt that. Number two, you've forgotten what you actually enjoy about the work. And three, and this is a big one, you're achieving things, but you're actually feeling emptier than you did before.
Does any of that sound familiar? I know it certainly does for me, just sharing it with you here on this show. The question that changed everything for me is this. It broke me out of my cycle. It broke me out of this cycle. Why am I really doing this? Not the surface level answer, not the to be successful or to make money, that kind of ethereal, nonsensical, meditative answer, but the real why.
I'm going to give you a simple exercise in a minute that will cut through all the BS and get you to your real why. But first, you need to understand something about your brain. See, there are two types of motivation driving you right now in this moment. External motivation, that's the money, the status, Instagram likes. And internal motivation, that's the stuff that actually makes us fulfilled.
