And even the arrival of former Dublin player and manager Desi Farrell into the same restaurant to offer his personal condolences couldn't soften the blow.
The fact of the matter is, though, that personal heartbreak aside, this was another exceptional weekend of football with four tight games, two, maybe three classics, tight finishes, And now two mad All-Ireland semi-finals to look forward to.
