And had quickly uncovered the deception behind Mary Sutherland's mysterious fiancee. Mary's stepfather, James Winderbank, had wanted to prevent her from marrying because the household benefited from her independent income. When he could no longer keep her isolated at home, he had disguised himself as Hosmer Angel, using dark glasses, false whiskers, a whispered voice, and typewritten letters to conceal his identity.
Winderbank had courted Mary himself and had taken the scheme as far as the wedding day, when he had disappeared from the cab and left her believing that her beloved Hosma might someday return. Holmes had confirmed his theory through distinctive faults of Winderbank's typewriter and a description supplied by his employers. Furious at the cruelty of the trick, Holmes had confronted him with But Winderbank had escaped before Holmes could punish him. Holmes decided not to tell Mary the truth, believing that she was so devoted to her illusion that she would refuse to accept it.
