Chapter 1: What makes acai bowls a popular food trend?
Now, have you had an acai bowl? They are the latest food craze popping up in food trucks and cafes around the country. So what's the hype all about? And are they as healthy as sellers would have us believe? Well, Brian O'Connell took the acai bowl test for us. He joins me now. Morning, Brian. Morning, David.
Chapter 2: Are acai bowls as healthy as advertised?
OK, what are we talking about?
I'm very impressed you got the pronunciation right. It's kind of, it's raised your hipster credentials hugely. What we're talking about is a food dish that's hugely popular. And I realised how popular they were when a colleague told me her teenage son had used her Revolut card to pay for one. So they're obviously popular with Gen Z, but they've actually crossed generations. So essentially,
It's like a smoothie you can eat. It's made from the Brazilian acai berry. It's usually, it has granola, it has fruit, it has some toppings. It's put in a bowl and then some people might throw in a bit of Nutella or a bit of peanut butter on top. So there are like lots of different versions.
It's considered a superfood and I suppose some people buy them thinking they're ingesting a bowl of goodness, but they can actually be high in sugar, they can be high in calories as I've been finding out.
And I know you talked to two experts, but first you went into a business in Cork selling them.
Yeah, this isn't my attempt to get free acai bowls for life, by the way, but I was in No Sin in the Marina Market. It's a business on the go five years. They make shakes, smoothies, and they make these bowls as well, but they have their own version of it. So very much it has an Irish focus. Now, I went behind the counter, chatted to Warner Dan O'Brien, along with some of the staff.
Dan, big into his fitness, and he told me how the business began.
So I started off with a very simple concept, a rubber ball, which is an açaà concept, but made Irish, true to ourselves. We should have went for the Brazilian berry, we went for the Irish berries instead.
So with an açaà bowl, it's Brazilian fruit?

Chapter 3: What unique ingredients are used in acai bowls?
Again, we carefully source our granola, so we went for this one. It's a gluten-free, low-sugar granola, sweetened with a little bit of honey. At half the same morning and lunchtime will be the most popular time for these bowls. However, summertime, it's bright out until late, we always get a rush from that 7 to 8pm coming in as well.
That's Dan O'Brien there of No Sin.
And you spoke to some customers, Brian. There wasn't a typical age range. I mean, this was about lunchtime. It was about 1pm I was there.
Chapter 4: How did a local business adapt acai bowls for an Irish audience?
So people were buying them as an alternative to lunch. Some people were buying them. They told me they were going to take them home, freeze them and have them the next morning. I spoke to one woman who's converted in the last six months. And then I spoke to Julia, who's from Brazil, which is obviously the home of this fruit. And she told me how popular they are back in Brazil.
Everybody likes, like always, acai bowls because it's so sunny there, so it's so hot. Everybody wants something healthy and, you know, nutritionist.
And you can see in Ireland then it's becoming more and more.
More popular, yeah. I came here and then everybody's talking about like acai bowls and everywhere that you go has some acai bowls.
What do you put in yours?
I love to put almond butter. For me, it's the perfect match.
Because you can make it very healthy and then put lots of Nutella, lots of peanut butter, and it can kind of take away the healthy from it.
It's good, but you know what? I prefer when it's more healthy.
And in Brazil, is it very similar to what's being offered here, or is it different?
