Nothing great about me, Charlie. You just like to say that. But thank you for having me. And yes, a very special guest. The one, the only, the D-Mace, Danica Mason.
Welcome. It's good to be here. I was excited for the call-up. Wyther and I have actually been working together for, oh, I'm going to say close to, what, 13, 14 years?
Wow.
Yeah, I think so. I think 2013 I started. And I remember sitting there in the sports department and I was thinking to myself, shit, that's Danny Wyther.
So you are a legend, mate.
I'm not a legend. That's not the response I really want from someone. Danica is now a true legend. She's not like me. Yeah. Um, and she used to come in on the weekends, uh, work for nothing. I think Kenny organized you to come in, Kenny Sutcliffe. Um, and she would sit there quietly in the corner. taking everything in and you could tell from the very start she was a go-getter. Yeah. I think she worked for free for like a couple of years.
Yeah, a year and a half.
Just free, no payment at all.
Who is Danika Mason and how did she get her start in TV?
I was still at uni, so I was at uni in Wollongong and so I'd drive up to Sydney and do the whole day Saturday and then drive back to Wollongong.
Yeah. And the best thing about it, Charlie, she was humble then and a good person and she hasn't changed much. One little bit.
Yeah.
Not one bit. She's, of all the people at Nine, like if anyone wants to look up to someone in terms of being a good person and a brilliant presenter, Danica's the person there. You've got a fan in Danny. Oh, yeah. You're too kind. You know that. I'm very lucky. I get to work like, I got to work with Kenny Sutcliffe, who like absolute legend. Yeah. Like James Bracey's on his way to being the next Ken Sutcliffe. Yeah. He is unbelievable as a host. He's unflappable. And Danica's, you know, in that conversation, when you come to people who can just do it and do great things on TV, she's it.
I remember getting the call from Kenny when he said I could come in for a week or two for initial work experience and then I asked him if I could stay on and I remember sitting there just thinking, these are people that I used to watch on TV, you know, when you're a kid.
Kenny especially.
Yeah, Kenny, every single night, you know, you're eating dinner and you're watching the news and yeah.
So it was always a goal for you then to work in television?
Yeah, yeah. So, well, when I left uni, sorry, when I left high school, I actually started an engineering degree. I don't know why I did that.
You wouldn't even know what a tunnel is.
Yeah, I know, literally. I got good marks in my HSC, so I thought, you know what, I'll do engineering just randomly. And it lasted about two and a half weeks doing that. And I was like, I don't think this is for me. So then took a year off.
Like the streets, she had street smarts from the start. And that's, I think as a, as a journo, um, you don't have to be the best rider. You don't have to be the best, uh, the best, like putting together a story. But if you got street smarts, um, it's going to get you a long way to start with. And she, she Danica is, well, I don't think anyone dislikes you. You're the opposite to me.
I'm sure there's someone.
I'm sure there's a few. Maybe small colleagues. But anyway, she just gets on with people and people warmed her and they respect her. And she also has a way of... getting to know people really well.
