What is the main topic of the NRL vs AFL Code Wars?
Triple M footy lives on, listener. Thanks to McDonald's and Ream Hot Water. Welcome to the Triple M Code Wars, are we calling it, boys? Is it AFL v NRL?
I thought we'd have a sting.
I thought we'd have a whole... Curtis has had six months to prepare for this.
Surely, surely a bit like some sort of headline act for the name of this.
NRL vs AFL Code Wars with Luke Keery and Jude Bolton. We've got the great Jude Bolton here representing AFL and the great Luke Keery representing NRL. Luke Keery, the first thing on the agenda. Now, this is very interesting. And I quote you. You can't quote me. Well, I can. I'll sue for defamation. Well, sue away. What's his quote? He says he believes he could have played AFL and thinks more NRL players could play AFL rather than the other way around.
Hold on.
Luke Keery believes AFL's advantage is really only just fitness. Only.
How do Luke Keary and Jude Bolton view the rivalry between NRL and AFL?
Only. That is the most ridiculous comment. Is that verbatim? Is that word for word? That is the most ridiculous comment. All right, let's just break this down, all right? No, I couldn't play AFL and I've never believed I could play AFL. Yes, there are more NRL players that could play AFL rather than AFL players. Has an AFL player ever come over and played NRL? No. No. And what was the last thing you said? Their only advantage is fitness. That's wrong too because they can obviously kick a ball better than us. And other than that, it's probably just fitness.
And long distance running. Like, I always maintain that we wouldn't be able to, like, deal with all the full brunt or, you know, hit up, crouch, you know, like, but the 360 nature of footy and the aerobic fitness, absolutely, I take that on board, but that ball handling as well.
Like, Well, two of our boys have been over there and didn't do too well. They didn't do too well. So no one's actually gone. No one's actually done it.
Israel Folau was at the peak of his powers. He shouldn't have gone. Obviously the cash and he set himself up and things like that. But it would have been incredible to see him. In league. Did he go any good at all? Not really. Nah, not really. Carmichael? He actually played pretty well. I thought Carmichael showed some, like particularly his tackling and defensive acts. And then he kicked the winner after the siren against Richmond, which was an incredible moment up in Gold Coast. So... Yeah, I think they're so different, the games, and particularly the different body types.
Interestingly, in 2013, I did three weeks with the Suns in Arizona. Cooper was with the Brisbane Lions. Now, it wasn't like... It was very early in the preseason, November, December. You know, they all just did the altitude camps. So it wasn't like full-blown AFL ball skill training, whatever you call it. It was running. And I was fit. Like, I'm talking 21, 22.
Did you do the Broncos and stuff like that?
Very fit, yeah. But I was in the last group with Kyle Michael Hunt, Campbell Brown going. And I was like... Well, I'm fit, but like, I think it was Jaeger O'Meara. Yeah. There was a few guys there who were just like.
What issues does Western Sydney face in promoting AFL?
Yeah, it was Junior, those guys. Like unbelievable fitness. Like I'm talking 14, 15K sessions, just cruising around. But then, admittedly, I would go to the gym with them and we're doing like heavy strength training, like low reps and they're, you know, 10, 12 reps of pretty light stuff. So it is different.
We had, um, back in the day, like we had sessions with Newcastle and Joey Johns is picking up the AFL football and just doing whatever he wanted. Like, you know, like it even looked back at the likes to say Greg Inglis and stuff like that, like picking up a footy and just launching them. Like, I think, um, There's certainly, I do take that there's some guys who would be able to transition pretty well, but just the sheer ball handling and executing a kick under pressure on the MCG in front of a hundred thousand, like it's, it's high pressure stuff. And yeah, they're just very different games.
How do you guys feel about the code wards? First of all, at that athlete level, when you guys were playing AFL and NRL, was there a genuine rivalry there?
