Welcome to Triple M NRL Daily here on your Friday. Finals footy kicks off again today, week two of finals. We got two legends in the game of rugby league. Two of my favourite players. No, no, no, two legends. Two legends. Marcelo Montoya, Jared Weir Hargraves. How are you lads? Charlie. Good. Good Charlie. Thanks for having us, bro. Mate, good to see you again. This is the second one of the year you've done. That's right. But Mars, it's his debut. Yes. So we've got to make him feel welcome. Hundred percent, hundred percent. Any stories for us, Mars? On debut?
Marcelo Montoya 0:51
Uh no stories. Um, maybe after off off off air I got some stories, Jared. So we'll share some afterwards.
Charlie White 0:57
Few weeks into retirement though, mate. Yeah.
Marcelo Montoya 0:58
Nah,
Charlie White 0:59
it's cool. How do you find it all?
Marcelo Montoya 1:00
No, it's been good. I was saying it Jared before. Um I think like the body sank me a lot. Um but mentally it's still been it's been a drag. It's been hard to be honest. But um in saying that I I enjoy every bit of it now with the girls at home.
Jared Waerea-Hargreaves 1:12
Mm. What about having the freedom now, bro? You know, a after I guess playing for so many years. Yeah. Young kids at home, wife, just having the freedom to be a dad and pick and choose what you want to do.
Marcelo Montoya 1:24
Bro, for sure. I mean and as you know, like I had kids a bit later in my career as well, Jared. So it's mean to be present for them a bro. As you know, being at at um training, it's like you're so selfish towards your craft and and and your game and how you prepare. So it's nice to be able to go home and not not carry that load on me as well. And with with doing whatever I want, it's mean. Like I don't have to wake up in the morning and go, man, I have to prep for training. I can get up. I can train today if I or or like if I don't want to train, I'm just gonna chill at home. So it's been good so far. Um and yeah, I'm bro like I'm enjoying it. I'm enjoying being around the club still and I think moving forward that'll be a good role for me, yeah.
Marcelo Montoya 2:02
You
Jared Waerea-Hargreaves 2:03
got a role there, bro?
Marcelo Montoya 2:04
Yeah, yeah. So I'll be doing I'll be doing the well being for the for the top thirty boys, which is pretty cool. It's I guess for me, 'cause I pulled the pin a bit earlier than what I wanted to, um, it it kinda dawned on me straight away. So but the club's been good with me. Like they kind of just kinda drip drip feed me into that role and kinda allowed me to be able to be around the boys still and not kinda just go straight to the staff side of things. So but it's been good so far.
Charlie White 2:27
What does that mean, the well being stuff? Is that like they're off the field, what they're getting up to? Is it helping them find, you know, other interests outside of footy? What does it look like?
Marcelo Montoya 2:34
Right, it's a great question. I mean

How do former players describe the new welfare/well‑being role at the Roosters and its impact on current players?

Marcelo Montoya 2:36
Like when I first started, there wasn't really a well being role at at the clubs, I think, in the minute, a Jared. But now it's like you have someone that's dedicated to the top thirty that kind of I guess just sees sees how the boys like are feeling after games, um, what they're going through mentally with their family and stuff like that. And I think for me, why I'm so passionate about that kind of stuff is because You know, no one kinda sees what goes on behind the scenes, you know, at at um at work. And I mean, unless you're in and in and around in amongst that you kinda see what the boys go through after games, after losses and and stuff like that. So I'm kinda in there just to, you know, I I guess just get a touch on how the boys are um and then and then just help out where I can and if they need a hand here and there.
Marcelo Montoya 3:16
So it's a great role and um yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
Jared Waerea-Hargreaves 3:19
I think the biggest thing like you you've lived it. You've been through the highs and lows and y you know exactly what uh I guess goes into that and and having those relationships with current players, the younger generation, you know, um, you can connect on different levels.
