And it's been running for a very long time. The tub was filled to the top. And the water kept flowing until it came over the side. It soaked into the carpet and it spread out to the hallway. Nobody had come in or out of that apartment in a day and a half, and it's still running when a man walks up to that door with a master key. I told you what happened on Saturday, march twenty eighth of nineteen ninety eight in Missouri. This was a farm town of about 3,000 people. It's called Portageville. Tony Scherer and his 15-year-old son Steven come home. It's a little after 7 p.m. They'd been out working on the fields all day. They get stuck behind a truck blocking their only road home. It fell over, it's in the middle of the road. It's got fertilizer across everything. Cops come, they block it off. Steven picks up his dad's cell phone, calls his mom while they're waiting, and she says she's gonna go pick up some pizza and then take him to his girlfriend's house after they're done eating. And they get the answering machine, which is odd because they had spoken to her not too long ago, and when they pull in, Sherry's car is in the garage and the hood is cold. And inside Steven ends up finding his mother and his twelve year old sister dead on their living room floor. thirty eight year old Sherry Sherer and Megan, who was in sixth grade. She played basketball. She had just won a public speaking contest the day before. Sherry was warm. Megan was cold. And both had been shot with a twenty-two caliber weapon, and both had socks stuffed in their mouths. Megan had been bound with an orange electrical cord, and she had been sexually assaulted. Sherry had marks on her wrists showing that she had been restrained at one point as well, but whatever he had tied her with.

She's got kids with her. He's got a maroon van. He tries to talk his way inside. She fought for her life, and somehow she's able to get the door shut. But he shot through it. And hit her.
But she survived. Her name was Stephanie. Ballistics proved the bullet in her arm came from the same gun that killed Sherry and Megan. So this man was on the move. And he was also a stranger. Stephanie had never seen him before, and he came to her door and tried to talk his way in. Which they presume he also tried to do with Sherry and Meghan. Investigators had his DNA from the very first night, because a highway patrol sergeant named Don Wyndham noticed a mark on Megan's body and swabbed a clear substance around it without being able to say why he did that.
