Hey cheeks, I'm Sal. And I'm Al. And this is Two Break Cheeks, the show that shares life lessons and tips to help make you rich in life. And welcome back to another monthly favorites, September edition this time. So for anybody who's new to the monthly favourites, we share what we've been listening, reading, buying, loving this month. And give our little reviews and recs. So would you like to kick us off, Al? What's your first monthly favorite from September?
Sally McMullen 0:35
I would love to. My first monthly favorite is a post I saw on Instagram about a happiness study. Ooh, it's like, give it to me. Yeah, I'll take what I can get. Pitman. So it says A man who studied happy people for forty years said these eight things decide your quality of life. Mm. And I was like, Write that down, write that down. Yeah. Okay. So I'm gonna run through the list and we can have a little discussion on each. Yes. Okay, so number one, how far you live from your work? Yeah. A long drive eats hours you never get back. Make it shorter and you buy back time, energy, and peace every single day. Mm. Now you're someone who used to do like an hour and a half commute every single day each way. Yeah.
Alex Hourigan 1:20
Yeah, so I can absolutely vouch for this. And I think that's the thing like with any big major decision that you make in life is like what is your everyday gonna look like and what is like your morning and nighttime look like. Like for the first like maybe three years I think of my career, I was commuting from Wollongong to Sydney every day, which was yeah, like an hour and a half each way, so at least three hours in commutes, let alone like delays, missing the train, all of that stuff. And like it was definitely doable. And I was able to like do things on the train. Like at the time I was working on my honours thesis.

What eight happiness habits did the study reveal and how can they improve my life?

Alex Hourigan 1:53
So I would like do a lot of uni work on the train or I would read books or listen to audiobooks. So it's not like my quality of life was completely diminished or anything. But it just meant that like the work life balance was harder because I would associate the commute with the time that I spent at work. At work. And it meant that like if I wanted to do something after work with a friend or if I wanted to go to the gym or like yeah, you know, go to a concert or something, like it made all of those things so much harder. Sometimes it is just

like a

necessary thing as well.
Sally McMullen 2:22
Like not the same thing, but like I used to live like an hour ish away from work and like that's just where I lived. And it was just what it is. But that's number one.
Alex Hourigan 2:33
Mm-hmm.
Sally McMullen 2:34
Number two, what you look at every day, your feed teaches your mind what to expect. Scroll drama all day and your mind starts to think in drama. Feed it calm and it gets calm. I think that's a good point. Like if your feed is constantly like TikTok drama and like hate videos and like whinging and complaining, like That's how your brain is going to start perceiving just everyday life. That's how you will start kind of computing information when it goes into your brain. Yeah. Number three, your sleep. Nothing else works when this one is broken. Guard your sleep like it holds up your whole life because it does. Yeah. Number four, who you spend the most time with. You slowly become the five people closest to you.
Sally McMullen 3:18
Have you heard that theory? Yeah, I
Alex Hourigan 3:19
think I.
Sally McMullen 3:19
I brought it up on the show a few weeks ago. Yeah. Keep the ones who lift you up and let the ones who drain you get quiet. Number five, how much you move your body. A body that sits all day makes a restless, heavy mood. A daily walk is the cheapest lift you will ever find. Number six, your money stress. It's not about being rich. It's about not lying awake over bills. Build a small cushion and watch half the worry go quiet. Number seven, sunlight and time outside. Ten minutes of morning sun resets your whole day. The people who feel the best are really the ones stuck inside all week. Which, you know, there's a level of control that like comes with that. Like if you have to go to work and work in an office every day, you can't control that.
