Chapter 1: Who is Bock and why is he significant to Michael Carpenter?

2.326 - 33.09 Natasha

This is an unspoiled network podcast. This is unspoiled, covering the Dresden Files, book 18, 12 months, chapters 32, 33, and 34. In these chapters, we have to take care of a problem. And by we, I mean Daniel Carpenter, who really impresses me. A lot.

0

34.933 - 60.261 Unknown

Welcome to Unspoiled. Welcome to Unspoiled.

0

73.859 - 87.537 Natasha

Welcome to the show, everyone. I am Natasha. I'm Rashawn. Okay, so tell me how you felt that it was indeed Bach, which you were very much hoping it wasn't.

0

87.637 - 109.336 Rashawn

I was really hoping that it wasn't because I didn't want the consequences that would come from that. Sorry about that. But it was Bach and it was him and his people. And once we got there and we saw what was going on, it was so weird.

0

Chapter 2: What does Harry reveal about his feelings for Murphy?

109.356 - 112.725 Natasha

Did you hear my phone ring? Foley sounds over there, yeah.

0

113.195 - 121.011 Rashawn

And then it stopped. And then it just stopped. Because it was like, oh, wait, no, we're supposed to be on Do Not Disturb. It was like it caught itself fucking up. It was the weirdest thing.

0

121.412 - 126.403 Natasha

Oh, my God. Like... That's really funny. All right.

0

126.423 - 128.547 Rashawn

God, don't leave me a visual voicemail.

0

128.647 - 154.069 Natasha

I can't take... The visual voicemail thing is... a curse i i understand i there's got to be a way to turn it off this pops up while i'm doing my recordings all the time and it's so distracting and it really frustrates me it's just boop right there yeah and it's like way more distracting when you're the only one on camera i can't even imagine it's no bueno

154.049 - 156.772 Natasha

But anyway, you didn't want it to be Bach.

157.152 - 176.034 Rashawn

Yeah, I didn't want it to be Bach because of the implication that we have mortals hurting other mortals with black magic that it puts Harry in a position where he has to confront them and maybe stop them using because I don't know how much force he's going to need to like make them behave.

Chapter 3: How does Harry's past influence his current decisions?

177.155 - 201.319 Rashawn

Yeah. The fact also that not only is it boxed, it turned out that it was throwing the magic, but it really was some of those guys, those assholes from the Brotherhood that we met last podcast, that were harassing the people at Box Bookstore. Yeah. So it was just a bunch of bad, like, actions from people that I want to have, I want better from. Yes.

0

201.919 - 205.343 Rashawn

On the flip side, because there's always a fucking flip side.

0
0

207.307 - 234.394 Rashawn

Constantly reminding myself that these are deeply, deeply traumatized peoples that have lived through an unimaginable occurrence. Their whole entire worldview has been shifted, which I've been thinking a lot about. The magnitude of the shift that occurs in these books and wondering about real life. Like, has something happened that so fundamentally shifted people?

0

234.695 - 262.266 Rashawn

your entire way you know the way the world functions. And I've been thinking about that a lot, and I've come up with a couple of, like, singular instances, but nothing of the magnitude of what's happening in the books, because I don't know how real life could match something as, like, the supernatural being showing up with a weapon of mass destruction and leveling the city. You know what I mean?

263.347 - 264.448 Rashawn

But, so...

Chapter 4: What are the implications of black magic in this episode?

265.711 - 296.041 Rashawn

as irritated as I am with the behavior of both the brotherhood and the kids at the bookstore, the guys, the people at the bookstore, they're just scared. Yeah. Terrified. Um, Carl and his band of goons are behaving like falling for our worst human instincts, you know, like just like, like doubling down in a tribalism and, um, And othering people.

0

296.482 - 315.31 Rashawn

And then because you've othered them, that gives you the right to enact violence against them. You know, it's just like it's something that we're watching in real time. People falling into this trap. You know, whether... Don't want to get into a lot of political stuff, but you guys are all aware what's going on in the world.

0

315.37 - 336.651 Rashawn

So Carl is a real guy that we all know and have encountered on the apps or the news, you know, in our families. So I found myself being really, really conflicted between being really angry and also just like, but I get it. Yeah. We're just all so scared.

0

336.691 - 352.89 Rashawn

And I had said last time, the thing about box is that Harry had promised to like help them out and we hadn't really seen it, but it didn't mean it didn't happen because the way the book is going, so much time is passing between each chapter and

0

Chapter 5: How do the characters deal with trauma and guilt?

354.102 - 384.049 Rashawn

I was given the benefit of the doubt. Harry kept his word. And basically, Harry had to kind of own up to... I had sent a couple of guys from the Bean to hang around a little bit. But I kind of lost track of this whole thing. Kind of fell off my radar. So that's kind of my bad. So yeah, what do they do? There's been... It's after New Year's Eve, so it's the beginning of the year.

0

384.109 - 403.026 Rashawn

He and Bach have their conversation. It's like in the fall, you know, around the Halloween-y time. Yeah. So it's been a couple months, and they haven't seen the protection that they were promised in a real way. So, I don't know, guys. And then Daniel...

0

Chapter 6: What does Daniel Carpenter's leadership reveal about his character?

405.149 - 407.511 Natasha

I mean... Listen, we will get there.

0

407.532 - 410.955 Rashawn

First... We don't expect nothing less from Michael Carpenter's children, right?

0

411.195 - 434.7 Natasha

Yes, this is... Alright, so let's go to 32. Harry has Maggie at the castle and it's, you know, it's over the weekend, so she is here and he gets her set up with a movie and then he goes to Bok Order Books. And

0

435.693 - 465.413 Natasha

he says that like he has become barely passable as we know with veils because of training with Molly and having to be decent enough to train her at all but this is not something that he is talented at uh so he is able to watch as people head inside and what did he used to call this type of magic he used to call it delicate yes and he never had like

0

465.95 - 475.922 Rashawn

Yeah, and he never had the, like, the real, like, a natural inclination towards it, because he's all... Fuck subtle is a literal line from the books earlier on.

475.982 - 501.745 Natasha

He yells, fuck subtle, as he kicks a door in, as I recall. So, yeah. He's out here kicking a lot of doors in. So... He's recalling, while he's at Bach-ordered books, the things that have happened here. Kaul and Kumori.

502.332 - 530.736 Natasha

having the book um and you know lashiel introducing herself to him here as if she were an employee you know the whole thing um that brought up the thought that perhaps the coins of the knights of the black and denarius were connected with cowl somehow and one of my eyes started twitching one of my eyes started twitching too i was like what are we doing here why why why would you bring this up now sir

531.172 - 537.092 Natasha

This is such a popular thing to guess who Kaoru... Kaoru... Kaoru and Kumori are.

Chapter 7: What challenges does Harry face with the Brotherhood?

537.553 - 542.329 Natasha

And, um... I... There was somebody in the, um...

0

542.478 - 568.013 Natasha

discord forgive me guys i can't remember but they basically were like i just don't find it fun to try and guess because like it could be anybody we don't have enough information so it's just sort of you can make up whatever you know which i think is what appeals to some people about it but uh the only thing i really remember about cal is how powerful they were like how they were how much magic they had the access to

0

568.313 - 574.264 Natasha

And Komori did death magic, but to bring people back to life from death.

0

574.284 - 576.248 Rashawn

I couldn't remember anything about Komori.

0

576.428 - 600.161 Natasha

Yeah, she, there's an encounter with an EMT who watches her. There's a guy who's like literally dead and she comes over and like kisses him. So it looks like, but it's not CPR. CPR. And suddenly the guy is alive. And the EMT is like, that dude was dead. Do you understand me? I know a dead person. They were fully dead. This was not her saving his life on the brink of death.

601.362 - 619.06 Natasha

So yeah, she talks to Dresden at one point about like, imagine if nobody ever had to die and we could have like go to an actual concert by Mozart today kind of thing.

Chapter 8: How does the episode conclude with Harry's emotional journey?

620.255 - 628.206 Natasha

To which I said, the world can't hold everybody. If nobody dies, though, why are we talking about that part? But we just didn't talk about that part.

0

628.307 - 641.505 Rashawn

It's fine. I know I had asked you, I think I'm pretty sure I asked you back whenever that book happened, if you had seen Torchwood, which was like... Oh, you have mentioned.

0

641.565 - 642.647 Natasha

I have not, though. Yeah.

0

642.727 - 670.814 Rashawn

Which is a side project from Doctor Who, which you've now been encouraged to watch. Since that's done and you're not going to go back, I can tell you about Torchwood now. So they had a... I didn't really watch the series. I watched... There was a mini-series event, like a one season on a premium, like Showtime or something. And the whole premise of the season was people stopped dying.

0

672.475 - 688.267 Rashawn

And it was... The world was global. But... And I want you to... I thought of you... Because a good chunk of the show is the logistics of what does it mean to the world when people stop dying.

688.607 - 688.847 Unknown

Yeah.

688.867 - 703.01 Rashawn

What do you do with all the bodies? What do you do? Because people weren't, like, there were people who were, like, on death's door, who were dying of diseases, who were shot, who, you know, they were, it wasn't like their quality of life got magically restored to full health. They just didn't die. Yeah.

703.351 - 703.671 Natasha

Yeah.

703.988 - 730.941 Rashawn

um and it ended up having an ending that was like but but the but the up to the ending i thought was pretty good and it was um the guy that plays um i don't know how much doctor who you watch but he would have popped up at some point um what's his name i can't think of his name but you would know his face if you saw him okay
