Why is there so much confusion about which cooking oils are healthy?

Veet 0:00
Nutrition is bloody confusing, isn't it? Especially with all the social media stuff, and that's why I created the vegan nutrition course. But I'm not here with this podcast episode to advertise the vegan nutrition course. I'm here to talk to you about something that attracts so much confusion, and that is oils. There is so much confusion around oils, and that has been made Even more so by the influence on social media medias, really not knowing what they're talking about, not using any scientific evidence. So, this podcast episode is about taking the confusion out of oils. One of the biggest misleading nutritional information pieces that I have seen in my time is how good coconut oil is for you. It is not good for you.

Okay, so if you don't eat any oils or you've decided that you're not going to have any oils or you've been told that you shouldn't have any oils, then you still want to be eating foods that contain fat. And this is why. So, and I will talk about the foods that you can have instead of the oils. So fats they provide, you know, oils they provide and fatty fatty foods provide essential fatty acids and your body cannot make certain fats. So they must come from food. So the certain fats that your body can't make are omega-3 fatty acid and omega-6 fatty acid. And these fats are needed for brain function, nerve function, vision, cell membranes, growth. development. And the sources of those um fats include flaxseed oil.
Veet 2:44
sunflower oil and sesame oil. Um, you can also walnut oil. I'm just putting that in the notes. I can't believe I'm doing that because I hadn't got that in. So um and they will provide you with um Omega uh three. Sunflower oil provides you with omega-6, and sesame oil also with omega-6. So um they are also fats, you know, so that's great for the brain, the nerve, the vision, the cell membranes and growth and development of your whole body. And then oils also help you absorb vitamins. So some vitamins are fat soluble, meaning you need fat to absorb them properly. Just going back before that, so if you didn't want to have oil, then you're just eating flaxseeds, walnuts, sunflower oil, sesame seeds, and for omega-3 you definitely need to be eating seaweed, seaweed.
Veet 3:38
Um, okay, so fat going back to point two, um, fats help you absorb vitamins and some vitamins are fat soluble. Uh that's vitamin A, D and E. And K. I forgot K vitamin A, D, E, and K. And um so for example, I can give you examples. So carrots, they contain better kerat um keratene, which is a precursor of vitamin A. Now, if you add a little oil to a salad or your cooked vegetables, that can help improve the absorption of vitamin A or those other vitamins that I said. And then another reason oils are good is they form cell membranes. So every cell in your body is surrounded by a membrane made largely from fats. And these membranes control what enters and leaves your cells. They um allow cells to communicate and they help tissues to function properly in the body.
Veet 4:37
Without adequate diet dietary fat, cell structure and function would be impaired. Um, fats and oils, they also support the brain and nervous system.
