Hello and welcome back to Walking This Way and to episode 14. If you're new here, it's so good to have you and thank you for joining us. And for those who've been here a while, you know the show is where we really have great deep conversations about everything that comes from being a midlife woman in Britain today, from perimenopause to HRT, bringing up our teens and everything that that throws up for us whilst looking after our elderly parents and all the chaos that sits with that. Brain fog, incapable of sitting still. And one of my favorite topics is mental health moving every day. In this episode, I'm gonna sit down with a brilliant woman who can share quite a few life lessons for us all on how to navigate this madness.

A few weeks ago, Helen Hopkins, aka the meal-time maverick, came round to my house and we spent the morning batch cooking, chatting, laughing, and getting to know each other. I R L. I was a little starstruck because meeting Helen face to face, I've known her for ages on Instagram. And she shared with me During that cooking session, the highs and lows of her journey and how her success has come hand in hand with both grief and anxiety. I just couldn't love Helen more for her openness and honesty. So I asked Helen if she'd come back and that we could record our conversation about everything she's experienced and learned along the way from going viral on Instagram. She's pivoted her career from a wellness coach to batch cooking queen, and how she ended up being a published author with Penguin.

All whilst dealing with intense grief, sorting probate, going through perimenopause, starting HLT, and running a weekly batch cooking community. We know that life is never linear and I want us to celebrate every single bit of it. So often we just see the glossy overnight success stories and have no idea about everything that went on behind the scenes. So stick with us to hear Helen's story. You'll learn so much about how to cook delicious Whole Foods on a budget for your family in a way that never even involves freezer roulette. But at the same time, I hope that Helen will share some of her wisdom about what a good life really is. She truly is one of life's greatest rock stars. I know you're gonna love this episode.

And here's a little Yeah.

Cooking is about putting ingredients together, making something delicious, sharing it with people that you love, and having the opportunity to connect. And that's, you know, that's what I believe this cookbook is. It's a bit of a lifesaver for modern women, for those women who want their families and their loved ones to eat real food, but don't have the time and capacity to think that through and not make it overwhelming. One hand, I had a phone in my hand, which is ding ding ding ding ding. And like you know, you've become very popular on Instagram too. And on the other hand, I'm in and out of the hospital with mum being very ill and as working out what the n like the last chapter of her life looks like.

And for me, batch cooking is one of the things that saved me. Like if I hadn't have been looking after myself in some way through batch cooking, everything would have fallen apart. So I'm so excited about my book, Lise, and I want to see as many people using this as possible. So how would you feel about me gifting a signed copy to one of your lovely listeners so they can try this out?

Today on walking this way, I'm joined by someone who I met in real life in my kitchen just recently. Helen messaged and asked if we could cook together, and my answer was a thousand percent yes. I'd only ever known her on the squares before and had no idea what to expect, but there was no need to be nervous. She was, of course, gorgeous, and we got on so well that I believe and I hope that this will be a long lasting, enduring friendship. Helen is a mum of two, and like most of us in lockdown became overwhelmed by the constant cooking of meals. So she started developing her batch cook system. She worked out how to make five days' worth of meals in under an hour to feed mixed dietary requirements and make sure there was something for everyone with well-balanced meals.
