It's so nice because we've known each other, I don't know, six, seven months, but virtually. So it's nice to meet in person. Yes. When I saw you, I was like, wow, he's really tall. Yeah. I did not know that you were that tall. I was like, oh, okay. Well, it doesn't come up usually in conversation, but we're going to kind of dig through the whole entire journey.

Chapter 5: How did a car accident change Cristal's life?

75.119 - 80.343 Richard Taite

I mean... I want to hear what it was like, and then what happened, and what it's like now. Don't you?

0

80.363 - 91.471 Host

Yeah. What was the introduction for you? What was kind of going on where that curiosity became substance use, abuse into addiction?

0

91.651 - 126.755 Host

I think when I was in high school was when I got exposed to everything. What's everything? Which was... Alcohol, ecstasy, weed. What else? I think that was it around that time. Cocaine wasn't until after high school. But I think it was more so. No. I think it was more so towards the end of my senior year. That's when I started to want to be part of the cool kids.

0

126.895 - 138.564 Host

And I think I always wanted to fit in with the cool kids, but I just never did. And I didn't realize that the cool kids were the type. Right. The types who just like get in trouble all the time.

0

138.744 - 151.811 Richard Taite

Lame. And now you realize that's what's cool changes. Yeah. Right? And those guys are all in either jail, prison, rehab, or mental hospitals. Or they peaked at 17. Or they peaked at 17.

153.291 - 178.842 Host

Well, my parents are from Mexico. So when they came here, I think they were 18. They had just gotten married. And then a year later, they had my sister. And then nine years later, they had me. So I think the times changed a lot. But I think what never changed for them was working. So they weren't ever home. They were always working. And my sister was the one who had to take care of me.

179.262 - 205.991 Host

So she was my mom, pretty much. And I just, I definitely want to say this, that I love my parents. And I know that they did the best that they could and knew how. They were kids themselves. And they didn't know, never learned about, you know, emotional intelligence. They never learned about mental health stuff. They never learned anything about that. And in our culture, that's non-existent.

206.171 - 234.272 Host

They'll make fun of you if you're... That's right. If you're sad. That's right. Be talking about your stress. Go clean or do something, you know? That's right. So I think I was the first one in my family who had ever decided to maybe... Not decided, but to choose to talk about it. And I remember vividly, I had gone to the doctor one day because I was depressed.

234.332 - 243.74 Host

I had gone through this really traumatic experience with friends who, I ended up getting jumped by a couple of friends who were my friends. They were girls.

Chapter 6: When did Cristal begin sharing her sobriety story publicly?

252.586 - 253.307 Richard Taite

Where? What city?

0

253.587 - 261.594 Host

In La Puente. Or West Covino. I think it was West Covino. You got jumped by a group of girls? Yeah. Who were my friends? Who was the boy involved?

0

262.496 - 289.621 Host

Uh, the guy at the time, he was my ex-boyfriend and shut up. Yeah. See, okay. This is a man. And I'm still friends with this guy. We're really cool still, but I don't know. I used to think in my mind that it was, it was planned. Like they did it on purpose. It, it, it just, to me, the way everything played out. All of us ended up in the same theater. I don't know. Were you dating this guy? Yeah.

0

289.901 - 297.006 Host

Okay. You were dating this guy and you, and you broke up with him. No. Oh, you didn't break up with him yet. Well, after that. Yeah. Like after all that happened.

0

297.026 - 303.551 Richard Taite

So this guy, this, will you tell me what happened? I mean, this is just, this is pissing me off.

303.651 - 320.483 Host

I need to know. So my gathering immediately because knowing, especially because I grew up in a town or went to high school in a town called Castroville. So it's like a northern version of West Covina. So I just figured there was a guy somewhere in place. Somebody liked them and he chose you over them.

320.803 - 344.595 Host

Oh, no, no. I don't think that was it. But I think I think I've always had this. I literally was just saying this earlier before I got here. I feel like I've always had. People, I don't like to say this out loud because I don't want it to sound arrogant, but I feel like people always were always somewhat envious of me and who I am or what I look like. I don't know what it is.

344.615 - 354.019 Host

That's always been my life. And, and I feel like people would always want it to be them and not be right.

354.099 - 361.983 Richard Taite

Before you leave this podcast, you're going to tell me why you got chucked. That is the only thing I want to hear. I can tell you now.
