Literally me, Quaid and Isaac all throughout primary school, intermediate. Our our childhood definitely sort of shaped my sort of rugby journey. I had a call from from Warren Gatlin. Um he was coaching Waikado at the time. Oh yeah. There's an opportunity to to be on the bench against in a preseason game. Managed to sneak onto the bench, you know, still at school and I still remember my first year in the Crusaders. Obviously, yeah, eighteen, you know, you look around the room and y you idolize these guys, right? Yeah. You know, Dan, Richie, you know, Ruben Thorne. So then me and Zaki, bang, we start sprinting in our bare feet, still in our training gears. Everyone's just streaming out of the city. It's all just kicking off.
You know, smell gas. You know, see people that have passed away. As you say, like everything happened real quickly. So five or six games uh for Glasgow and then bang, named in the Six Nations for 2013. As soon as like he read up my name, like all my teammates around me, you know, the guys helped me, you know, g get there, made some special memories, made some awesome friends, um, you know, playing on different parts of the world and uh um yeah, very lucky.

Rugby. The vision of him gliding past defenders as he gallops down the field will live with me forever. The Tokoro raised lad was gifted from a young age, so much so he made the Waikato NPC side while still at school. He then went on to win age grade World Cups with New Zealand to play over 50 games for the Crusaders and looked destined to spend his career chasing higher honours here in New Zealand. His path changed, and with months he was being over at Glasgow, where He was playing international rugby for Scotland, and after just five tests, he was selected in the British and Irish Lions. He went on to play at two Rugby World Cups. As well as playing for both London Irish and Saracens, where he won three premiership titles and two European Cups.
He also is a massive, massive lad. It's a real honor to have him on the podcast. It is, of course, the great. Sean Maitland. Welcome, mate. Thanks, mate. Hell of an intro. What a career, though. Oh
yeah, that was uh that was a great intro. But um yeah, it's great to be here, bro. Um yeah.
Mate, I didn't realise how many things you'd sort of done. Like obviously, um, I remember you back at the trials of under nineteen and twenties and I didn't make the team but and you probably wouldn't remember you probably just ran past me a few times when I was in the back but so um you were just a gun and I just remember how dominant you were at that level and um to see you go through the career that you've had has been pretty special. It is.
Yeah, it's been um hasn't been a linear journey, uh if you put it put it that way. But um yeah, no, I've I've been very lucky to to play as long as I can and uh as you say, like been in some pretty awesome teams and uh to have a career overseas, you know, it's um it goes so quick, man. Yeah. Like my first year at the Crusaders was two thousand and seven, so uh well, named in the squad for But yeah, it started off 2006, 7. That's all. So it's almost that's 20 years. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, which is crazy, right? Um but yeah, that's uh two years retired now, so on the other side. Um it's been ma it's actually been really smooth. Heavy family transition. Um, you know, you hear a lot of boys that go through, you know, this journey that we go on and uh you know life after rugby.
Um but I was Lucky enough that when I finished up at Saracens, um they're like, Oh, do you want to do some work? They made a real Yeah, I was like I was doing like I was um S C background, I was studying, uh, and that was sort of something I was pretty keen to do it. Yeah. Yeah I was like,
Believe it or not, I actually like training, I like the gym. A lot of the gym. Some boys are probably watching this saying, mate, eating eating.
