Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Want to have your say?
Ring Gerard on 1300 736 736. Now, back to Waitley. His first in the IPL. Second in D20 cricket. Now Mitch Marsh, what a knock. And for this season, the first overseas batter to get 100. It's been a phenomenal in innings from Mitch Marsh. Time to play fearlessly, Cooper. And Connolly does.
Chapter 2: What recent milestones did Mitch Marsh achieve in the IPL?
May not be of the middle. But it's enough to go all the way for six. So a first hundred in T20 cricket. For Cooper Connolly. First season in the IPL. And he gets a hand from his teammates.
It has been a productive week for Australians in the IPL. One's the captain and the long-termer. They shortchanged Mitch Marsh a few centuries there in T20 cricket. And Cooper Connolly, who's one of the youngsters that Australia has put a lot of faith in, is waiting for that to flourish. He's having a good IPL. Bharat Sundaresan keeps us up to speed here. Bharat, welcome back.
Chapter 3: How did Cooper Connolly perform in his recent T20 match?
Thanks, Jared. I guess if you are going to make your first T20 100 or first prominent 100, you want Ravi Shastri on air, right? It wasn't the usual Ravi, but still, it just feels even more special. But yeah, he became the youngest overseas player to make a 100 last week, Jared. And Mitch Marsh made that 100 the following night. So, And then Josh Inglis made 85, I think, two days later.
So a great week for Western Australians anyway in the IPO. But unfortunately for Mitch Marsh, his team, Lucknow, which is coached by Justin Langer, they've become one of two teams to be already knocked out of contention from the playoffs.
Connolly's runs have been significant through this tournament, really from its earliest stages. So there's an 87 and there's a couple of 30s and there's 107 not out. He's been given exposure early and hasn't yet performed in Australian colours. But this feels like a really important period for him.
Absolutely. And I think I mentioned it a couple of weeks ago about how, you know, Ricky Ponting saw something in him in terms of allowing him to bat in the top order, giving him that number three position. Because, you know, I mean, I guess like we're seeing that more and more in T20 cricket these days, Jared, that finishing role, 6'7", Yeah, actually, it's 6-7 there.
Chapter 4: What impact has Mitch Marsh had on his team this season?
So, if you're batting 6 or 7, you generally are seeing more experienced players kind of go down in those positions, especially in the IPL. So, to see something in Cooper Connolly to give him more time at the crease, as he has this season, Ricky Ponting as coach, has really helped Cooper Connolly blossom. You're right. I mean, there was an 87, there was a 77.
This 100 was in vain, but it's the kind of 100 where it will get talked about for a while to come, even though it came in a loss. And now that he's back in the squad or he has been retained in the white ball squads for Australia, maybe that's where Australia could look to play him as well. I'll be surprised if they don't bat him at number three behind Hayden Marsh.
And suddenly that looks like something you could work with going forward.
It's been an IPL without tight finishes. Is that fair to observe? And thus, when we had one, it really did stand out.
It absolutely did. So it was Bangalore getting over the line last week against... I forgot who it was against, but it doesn't matter because it was all about Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, who we've seen before many times on Australian soil. I think Aaron Finch still dreads facing Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, even though he's long retired.
And yeah, I mean, he walked out with Bangalore needing a 9-for-3 in a big game.

Chapter 5: Why is Cooper Connolly considered a promising young player for Australia?
I mean, it was two teams involved at the top of the table. And he just hit his first six in 10 years in the IPL. And that too over deep extra cover, sensational shot. And then just showed his maturity and experience when they needed two of one. just pushed it down the ground and came back for a second run.
Chapter 6: What were the standout performances from Australians in the IPL this week?
So, yeah, that was Bangalore beating Mumbai and knocking them out of the tournament, actually. So, yeah, because we've spoken about this in the last few weeks, we've seen a lot of scores of 220 and 230 being chased down with at least an over to spare. But I think that will change now, Jared. We see it every year in the IPL.
As we get to May, especially venues who host a lot of games like Bangalore or Mumbai or Chennai, The pitches start tiring. And even the game last night, Sunrisers didn't have to chase a big total. But they were bowled out for 80-odd. And just on that, Jared, just watch out for Kagiso Rabada. This is probably the best he's bowled across formats in the last two, three years.
And why that is important is we're just five months away from that big test series in South Africa. So it's something to keep an eye on. He's right now on top of the Wicked Takers tally. So we've had 56 games of the 70 on the way to the finals.
And as you point out, teams are being knocked out at the moment. Who are the best teams?
So Punjab, who we spoke about earlier, who went on that crazy run. So they've been grounded. They've lost their last three, four games. So they find themselves in the middle of the table. Sunrisers have had a good run, even though they lost last night. But Gujarat Titans, who started with three defeats, have now won five or six games on the trot.
So they don't have a massive Australian presence, except a genuinely massive Australian presence overall. on the in the support staff in the form of matthew hayden um but uh so they've been on uh yeah that's the team that rabada plays for so captain by shubman gill so they are the momentum team and could well become the first team to qualify but um from one to seven Thank you so much.
I'm just getting compliments about my hair, Jared. It wasn't planned at all. And so, you know, I've completely lost my train of thought. But yeah, I mean, from teams one to seven, everyone does have a chance. But Gujarat, the form team, Punjab and Rajasthan, who are flying early on. need to find some, you know, some form in what, three games to go.
And just on that, this is the penultimate year with 74 games, Jared. We are going into the 90s in two years' time. Oh, wow. You and I will be talking about the IPL for... Probably the entirety of the AFL season, by the looks of it.
It is overwhelming. Malcolm Speed's going to join me in the studio shortly. And one of the effects is, Sparat, what are we up to? Mid-May, and we've just had the second test match of the calendar year. So this is what I think... Cricket has changed so much. Yeah. Every now and then you just have to stop and say it out loud.

Chapter 7: How does the IPL format influence team strategies and player performances?
I always credit my mother with it, and At least back in the day in India, Indian aunties used to want some of my hair, which is interesting. It's just part of being me, Jared, but I do take good care of it and I'm always grateful when it comes my way.
We never quite know where we'll end up. Lovely. Thank you. We'll talk to you again next week. You can't wait, Jared. Have a great day. Bharat Sundaresan said the new ball last night, so you can catch up on the podcast, stumps and bumps. He is prolific, great friend of the program and has been for a good many years now.
