Adam White filling in for Gerard Whateley on this Tuesday morning. So just repeating that news from a short time ago, Germany out of the World Cup, losing in a penalty shootout to Paraguay. It was 1-1 after regular time. But in the shootout, it was ultimately a win to Paraguay. So Germany now out in the group stage in 2018 and 2022 and now in the round of 32 here in America. So a horrible run. since winning it all the way back in 2014. In the earlier match played in the World Cup, again, knockout match, Brazil came from behind to defeat Japan. That final goal coming in the 95th minute to Brazil. So Japan, the first out in the knockout stage. We're going to talk some tennis now because I must confess, I'm very jealous talking to Peter Johnston, leading tournament director around the world, but particularly here in Australia, because he's at Wimbledon, which started overnight.
So I was keen to get a bit of a flavouring as to how it's feeling in the build up to it. And obviously day one, which has just been completed. Peter Johnston, welcome to SEN.

I mean, it's been so hot in, in the uk in the last week as all over europe but then today was just sort of i don't know it was just beautiful just uh you know 25 26 degrees pack crowds good matches and it was really uh a beautiful opening to the to the event you're not making me feel any better Sorry.
There was a bit of drama, though, in the build-up. I mean, you know, from a local point of view, Jack Draper pulling out, Emek Raducanu pulling out. What sort of impact did that actually have to the start of the tournament when two of the hometown favourites aren't actually going to compete?
Well, especially Raducanu, because that was only happened... She got a stress fracture in the foot on Sunday, so she was scheduled to be first up. on the Monday. And, you know, so that ‑‑ look, the Brits are always big news and they haven't had a good day today. So, yeah, look, it's ‑‑ you know, they're usually the ones that they ‑‑ I mean, one thing that they do well or have traditionally done at Wimbledon is put the Brits on the show courts. And so, yeah, look, it does, you know, obviously reduce the number of stories. But, look, there's so many stories going around that it's ‑‑ there's plenty to talk about.
Yeah, absolutely. And it wouldn't be a day one without drama. Sina Djokovic, there was a couple of upsets as well. Sort of many, many things happened on the opening day. I did want to talk to you about Serena Williams though and her coming back and how important it is for the game of tennis or maybe it isn't important for the game of tennis. We're just in bonus time. How did you see all that unfold? And while she didn't play on the opening day, there's so much attention on her going into this year's Wimbledon, obviously.
Yeah, and she has been massive news. I mean, I think I net out that it is bonus time, kind of like you said. I mean, there's enough other things, a lot of the, you know, especially when you have, say, Andreeva winning Roland Garros and, you know, a lot of other stories, Sabalinka's so big these days, Rabakina, you know, You know, just recently Grand Slam and being a former Wimbledon champion. So there's all these stories. But I think Serena, it's just that extra level. She's playing doubles with Venus as well. I mean, there's a Nike shop not far from where I am and the whole front window is like there's almost a mural to it. You know, the goat has returned. And it's funny, we've got two goats going around here because you go to the Lacoste shop and there's Novak as well.
It's, you know, and this is where the beauty in London, where they decorate everything around town. But no, look, I think it's more like just bonus time. It's so interesting because she'll play Maya Joint, who for a fair while last year was our number one Aussie and who's just been really struggling with form.
