Tuesday morning. This is your town. This is your station. This is Whayley.
Good morning. That was entirely satisfying. A bit like those heady days of black caviar and winks. Unbackable favorites, living certainties, and no one was barracking for an upset. We were there to stand and cheer and revel in history. Present for the full coronation of a Brownlow count that rewrote the record books. Forty-seven votes broke the record, eleven proved the greatest winning margin, an unprecedented 13 times best of field polling in 18 games to equal his own record. And the Nick Dacos ascension to the summit of the AFL is complete within five seasons. In that time, I've held Marcus Ponton Pelly to. Be the best player in the competition, but the title has formally changed hands. It would be easy to take this for granted, given it was so widely predicted.
And when Nick stands on stage reflecting on when he was young, you can lose your bearings. He's 23 years old and has played 118 games. He's graduated from Rising Star in his debut season to four straight all-Australians. He's twice been the player's MVP and the coach's champion player. He's a best and fairest and a premiership player. And now has the crowning achievement of the Brownlow Medal. He's 23, having completed five seasons.
How does the show break down the Brownlow Medal results and Nick Dacos’s rise?
He's a phenom to be appreciated and admired. Other observations from the night. Dipper and Diesel won the Brownlow with 17 votes. Libera and Gavin Wanganin with 18. That's not really the dim dark past, but it seems like an eon ago. We're up to 47 now with a player averaging more than two votes a game. It feels like an entirely different award. Bailey Smith's 36 would have won every previous medal through to 2023. It seems there's an absence of anomalies this year. You you can tell me if I'm wrong here, but we're not ridiculing the umpires nearly as much this morning as has been the case in previous years. We gave them the requisite information, trusted them to use it, and enhanced the prestige of the awards.
No more pin the tail on the donkey. Connor McKenna seems like our kind of guy. Come into a windfall of cash and immediately think, I want to buy a horse. I still think the two best marks of the season were Liam Ryan and Harvey Langford, and they weren't finalists, but you want the wizard on every feature stage. Andrew Dillon read the last three rounds in precisely four minutes. If we read at that pace all night, the Brownlow count could be done in thirty-two minutes. It could be a punchy one hour show. And the ill-fated Brownlow multi failed. Isaac Rankin beat Jordan Dawson, who evidently was invisible through the first two months of the season. So I'd say all is pretty much as it should be after the Brownlow of 2026 as we stood and cheered for Nick Dakos.
Collingwood. N Dacos three votes.
Well We have three rounds to go. Nick Dacos leads by ten. And he cannot be caught. He is the 2026 Groundlow Medalist.
And I declare the winner of the 2026 Groundlow Medal, Nick Dakos from the Collingwood Reporter.
Oh mate, I was uh just speaking to Rowley about it. I never thought uh I'd be up on this stage. It's it's something that I genuinely have to pinch myself and uh we played together at Carey so it's very special to also receive the award from Rowley. As I said it's a massive award and um I'm so privileged to be up here and um yeah I I can't believe my Brownley Medalist to be honest.
The rest of us can. The rest of us could see it. Mel, I am truly privileged to have a seat at the G each week to watch Greatness in the Making and KF, thankfully, a royal commission is not required. Nick Dakos is our Brownlow medalist. Andrew Dylan's coming by the studio at 10 for the Brownlow debrief.
