How did rising bond yields affect major stock indices and energy shares today?

Alexis Moore 0:33
Here's your closing bell brief for Tuesday, September 15th. I'm Alexis Moore for the Wall Street Journal. The 10-year Treasury yield closed at a fresh high near five percent today. And stocks fell, continuing a downward trend. The Dow led losses falling more than 300 points, or 0.6%. The SP 500 fell 0.4%, and the Nasdaq fell nearly 0.8%. Brent crude was up almost three percent, ending at over one hundred and eight dollars a barrel.

Why are European bank stocks and crypto‑related companies dropping amid higher borrowing costs?

Alexis Moore 1:04
And as Brent prices rose, so did energy company shares. Occidental petroleum rose nearly three percent, shares of marathon petroleum were up almost four percent, and shares of Halliburton closed nearly two percent higher. Among other individual companies, shares of European banks fell today as global bond yields continue to push higher. It's a sign that investors are worried that higher borrowing costs could lead to more loan defaults. Shares of UBS were down around 3% in Switzerland, and shares of Deutsche Bank declined nearly 2% lower in Germany. Shares of companies tied to crypto are also down today. That's because the price of Bitcoin has been dropping.

What’s driving CrowdStrike’s stock surge while AI safety concerns linger for investors?

Alexis Moore 1:42
Coinbase slid about 10%, Robinhood lost around 3%, and Strategy fell more than 5%. And concerns about AI safety are still top of mind for investors. Cybersecurity company CrowdStrike ended the day up three percent. Yesterday it was the top performer in the SP five hundred.
