MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Detroit Tigers 6, Kansas City Royals 4 Chicago Cubs 8, Pittsburgh Pirates 0 Texas Rangers 5, Chicago White Sox 2 Tigers 6, Royals 4 – Carpenter’s 3-run homer rallies Tigers for 6-4 win, Royals’ 12th loss in 13 games Kerry Carpenter hit a three-run homer in a five-run, seventh inning that lifted Detroit Tigers over Kansas 6-4 and sent the Royals to their 12th loss in 13 games. Kansas City wasted a 4-0 lead and dropped to 0-15 in games started by Jordan Lyles, who allowed three runs and six hits in six-plus innings. He is 0-11, the most losses in the major leagues, and he broke the team record for winless starts at the start of a season, which had been set by Vida Blue in 1983. Zach McKinstry started the comeback with a fifth-inning RBI double that went through left fielder Edward Olivares’s legs, allowing Jake Rogers to score from first. Miguel Cabrera singled and Jonathan Schoop doubled, chasing Lyles in the seventh. Cubs 8, Pirates 0 – Surging Cubs race past reeling Pirates 8-0 to spoil touted prospect Henry Davis’ MLB debut Drew Smyly gave up three hits in five innings and the surging Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-0. Smyly (7-4) worked around five walks to win his second straight start following a three-game losing streak. Mike Tauchman finished with three hits and drove in three runs for Chicago. Dansby Swanson added two hits as Chicago spoiled the major-league debut of highly touted Pirates prospect Henry Davis. Davis, the top pick in the 2021 draft, doubled in his first major-league at-bat but couldn’t stop the Pirates from losing their seventh straight. Rangers 5, White Sox 2 – Jung hits 15th homer, Rangers hang on to beat White Sox 5-2 Rookie Josh Jung hit his 15th home run, Jonah Heim had a late two-run single and the Texas Rangers beat the Chicago White Sox 5-2. A day after wiping out six-run deficit in a win over Toronto, the Rangers hung on after Jung helped them grab a 3-0 lead. Heim broke open a 3-2 game with a two-run single in the seventh. The Athletic reported that Green would opt out. Green would have to notify the Warriors of his decision by June 30. NBA – Victor Wembanyama arrives in US from France ahead of Thursday’s NBA draft Victor Wembanyama has arrived in the U.S. for the NBA draft. The plane carrying Wembanyama from France arrived at Newark International Airport outside of New York City on Monday. He’s widely expected to be the No. 1 pick on Thursday by the San Antonio Spurs. Some fans knew what flight he was on and when the plane was landing, and many were waiting. Wembanyama cheerfully signed autographs, scrawling his name onto basketballs and Spurs jerseys before making his way into a waiting vehicle. NBA – Suns continue whirlwind of change under new owner Mat Ishbia Mat Ishbia’s five-month tenure as the new owner of the Phoenix Suns has produced a whirlwind of change. Nobody seems completely safe as the Michigan native continues his quest to deliver Phoenix its first NBA title. The aggressive owner oversaw his latest big move Sunday, when the Suns put together the framework for a trade that would send 12-time All-Star Chris Paul, Landry Shamet and other compensation to the Washington Wizards in exchange for three-time All-Star Bradley Beal. More moves could be on the horizon. NHL – Canada’s Connor Bedard honored as IIHF’s first male player of the year Presumptive No. 1 NHL draft pick Connor Bedard has been honored as the International Ice Hockey Federation’s first male player of the year. Bedard helped Canada win the past two world junior championships before turning 18. He was MVP of the most recent tournament after leading all players in scoring. Bedard is expected to be taken first in the draft next week by the Chicago Blackhawks. Hilary Knight was voted the IIHF’s first female player of the year for captaining the U.S. to gold at this year’s women’s world championship. NHL – Vegas-Florida Stanley Cup shows the value of street hockey in many US markets The Stanley Cup Final between the Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers was the scene of street hockey being played by kids outside in the desert and by the Everglades. The series showcased the benefits of ball and roller hockey in many U.S. markets where ice is hard to come by. The NHL earlier this year launched a street hockey program aimed at knocking down barriers to the sport that range from cost and time commitments to many families simply not thinking they belong. The aim is to create more interest in the sport even if just at a casual level. Golf – Tom Watson is the latest to want answers on the PGA/LIV deal Eight-time major champion Tom Watson is the latest to want answers on the PGA Tour’s new business partnership with Saudi backers of LIV Golf. He has sent a letter to PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan asking if the deal was the only way to solve the tour’s financial hardship. The tour has an agreement with the Saudi sovereign wealth fund and the European tour to pool businesses in a new for-profit company. One person who has seen the agreement says it contains assurances the tour would keep a controlling voting interest no matter how much money the Saudis invested. Golf – Wyndham Clark’s US Open win on Father’s Day is also a tribute to his late mom The U.S. Open wrapped up on Father’s Day. Golf’s newest champion would be the first to tell people he’s always been a mama’s boy. Wyndham Clark’s victory will be remembered for how a newcomer to the big time held off some of the biggest names in the game to stamp a poignant exclamation mark on a U.S. Open that had been to that point kind of hard to love. Clark’s mother, Lise, died of breast cancer in 2013, which sent him spiraling. The road back led him to leave college at Oklahoma State for a fresh start at Oregon. It involved more than one crisis in confidence. It hit a crescendo Sunday when Clark held off Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler for his first major title. Soccer – Mexico soccer coach Diego Cocca fired after 3-0 loss to US Diego Cocca was fired as coach of Mexico’s national team, four days after a 3-0 loss to the United States in a CONCACAF Nations League semifinal. The federation said Jaime Lozano will take over the national team. Lozano coached under-23 team to a bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Cocca was hired in February and led El Tri to three wins, a loss and three draws. El Tri had not lost to the U.S. by three goals in 23 years.
