Hello, I'm Georgie McCourt, the editor of Marie Claire, and welcome back to You're Going to Want to Hear This. Now, there is a moment early in my conversation with today's guest where I realized that this was not going to be an interview about a book, even though she has written a very, very good one. It wasn't even really going to be a conversation about sex or relationships or even heartbreak, although there are certainly plenty of all three. It was going to be a conversation about the stories that women tell themselves in order to survive love. What I love most about Lali's story is that beneath all of the outrageous detail, and there is so much of that in this podcast, all the humor and all the glorious oversharing is something that you will instantly recognize.
Because whether you've ever sat opposite a psychic in Manhattan or not, most of us know what it feels like to chase people who can't quite love us back, to confuse intensity with intimacy, and to mistake being chosen for being seen. Also to wonder whether the problem is timing, chemistry, fate or something broken inside ourselves. And maybe that is why this memoir resonates so deeply. Because it isn't about a cursed vagina at all. It's about what happens when a woman stops apologising for wanting everything. Love, work, sex, art, adventure, children and purpose. Let's meet Lali. Lali, you first met Cookie in that snowstorm in New York and she tells you that your love life is cursed. So take me back to the beginning of the book, which, by the way, is called My Cursed Vagina, which is the best book title of all time. Take us back to the beginning.
Well, I was saying, I think I was maybe 31, 32 years. And I was staying – I was on a Churchill Fellowship like to study theatre and bring back what I learned to Australia. And I was staying – but I was in New York and it was this big snowstorm. And I was just stuck in my Airbnb for at least like a week. And I was just kind of – it sort of was like this kind of intense time of loneliness because it was making me realize, oh, I'm really alone. And like meanwhile, I was like – I was texting – these two guys that I was in love with. I mean, two really does like bring the stakes down a little. Just putting out the calls to all your exes. But no, and I wasn't hearing back from them. I was like, oh, I'm completely like alone.
And then it stopped snowing. And I was like, okay, I'm out of here. And so I went for a walk and it was like about, I don't know, like at 9 p.m. or something. And I was walking down and I saw this neon sign saying psychic readings. And I was like, oh, maybe this is the answer to my loneliness.
And so I went in. I feel like that's very common. Like women often use psychics or tarot readers as sort of therapists in a way.
A hundred percent like a therapist, but like a quick fix therapist. So you don't have to do like years of work.
You can just kind of get right in there. Well, because ultimately the answer we want, women and men, I guess, if you're looking for love, you want to be told, it's okay, you're going to find love. And that's where, you know, Cookie comes in. So you're sitting there and tell me about how she actually comes to the realisation, like was it early on in the reading?
So she started off reading my palm and, like, she, like, traced all the stuff in my palm and so she was telling me, like, about my life and it was funny because I'd never had a palm read before and I found it, like, quite powerful to kind of hear I was going to have children and I was going to have like a long life and like, and, and, and even if I didn't know if she was like a hundred percent right or something, it was quite, it was like, Oh, I was surprised at my reaction hearing this.
