Ep. 3 - Getting to the “Core of the Matter” Why understanding your pelvic floor is essential for overall health; “To Kegel or NOT to Kegel That is the Question”

In this episode, I talk about why it is so important for people to understand their basic pelvic floor/core anatomy and its function. Having an understanding of how our bodies work allows us to identify common dysfunctions and seek the help we need to correct them. What does this have to do with the core? How does the core really work?  What determines how well the core works?  What can happen if the system is not working optimally? Pelvic floor dysfunction can happen when….? What are some changes that can affect the pelvic floor? Symptoms that the core is not working : 4 P's  Peeing- any kind of urinary incontinence (leaking),dribbling, urinary urgency, urinary frequency Pooping - fecal incontinence, fecal smearing, inability to hold back gas, constipation, incomplete evacuation Pain- Including pelvic pain, back pain, bra line pain, groin pain, hip pain pain with sex (Is NEVER normal!) Pressure- perineal pressure, rectal pressure, a feeling of dragging or organ dropping   “To Kegel or NOT to Kegel That is the Question”-  There is no one size fits all, just like any other exercise, kegels must be individualize Must be sure that you are performing them correctly and through all three layers of the pelvic floor muscles We use a FIIT: Frequency, Intensity, Interval, Timing prescription to individualize plan  Some people get WORSE when doing kegels if they are holding tension in the pelvic floor , Kegels are NOT for everyone !   Takeaways… Knowledge is Power! Know your basic anatomy and how it works! There is no “one size fits all” exercise for anyone, exercise should be individualized The deep core system should be treated as a whole, all components need to communicate and work in coordination with each other.  What is common is NOT always normal!
