What does it mean to go through chaos and come out stronger?
You will get through the chaos. You just need to remind yourself that you will. Quick throwback to my collegiate days as a rower. There are a few things that really stuck with me. One of which is the number 712. Let me explain. One of the hardest things we had to do was a 2,000-meter test on the rowing machine. Kind of a requirement to see where you're at, a benchmark. And the process, like I've explained before, it's not rocket science, right?
How can personal experiences shape our resilience?
You sit on it, you set the rowing machine, or ERG as we called them, to 2,000 meters, and you pull as hard as you can and try and finish as quickly as you can. There are, in my humble opinion, few devices on earth as torturous as that machine. Still to this day, love-hate relationship with it. And I remember on test day, just being in the middle of hell, right? Doing my best to focus on the next stroke, the next five seconds, as everyone on the team was. I always thought the middle thousand meters were the hardest. First 500 meters, pure adrenaline, right? You're just, your heart's racing. You don't even feel it happening. Last 500 meters, same, right? Tougher, you're tired, but you can see the finish line.
And there's something magical about that, right? There's something about seeing the end or feeling the end that takes the weight off. The middle 1,000, though... Lactic acid rapidly, you know, making its way through your body. Your lungs are on fire. Your quads are screaming. And then I'd see it. 712. Right on the screen in front of me.
What lessons can we learn from athletic challenges?
712 meters to go. And I'd simply remind myself every time I saw it that this would end. That I could rise above. That I could conquer this demon. And I'm not sure why or how that came to be, but I found peace in it. The sort of calm during the storm. Because when it hurts, we tell ourselves the wrong things. We miss the simple truths that matter most. Our brains, it's almost like they don't worry about pain. as much as they worry about the longevity of the pain. The heart of all suffering seems to be the fear that it will last forever, that there is no finitude. But those three numbers, they put things into perspective. They put the pain into perspective. They put the mission into perspective. They reframed the moment not as forever,
but as an opportunity, a fleeting opportunity. In life's storms, they aren't much different. They hurt while they reshape us, but they are not forever. And sometimes the reminder that there is another side and that our reaching those clear skies is an inevitability that can make the world of a difference. Athletics are just a great example because they're simple.
How does the concept of '712' symbolize overcoming obstacles?
They're literal, right? A literal representation of personal output, pain, and perseverance. Our lives, on the other hand, are a bit more complex. More challenging and convoluted at times. But I think those pillars of truth remain intact. While you're amidst the darkness, you need to become your own light. You need to remind yourself that this will end and will transform you for the better. So I ask simply that you find your 712, your number, your marker, your symbol, your faith. It won't do the lifting for you. but it will remind you that you're capable of doing the lifting yourself. It will remind you that you're strong enough, powerful enough, courageous enough. It will remind you that the voices in your head will chatter and dissuade because that's what those voices do, but they do not speak truths.
They simply make noise. They're that avatar of the loudest guy at the table with very little to add. They are distraction. Focus instead on the temporary nature of the battle you're fighting. Which, whether you realize it or not, is synonymous with the opportunity at hand. Second by second, push away everything but the now. Find a way to dig deeper, to fight harder, become stronger. There's a savage in you waiting to be unleashed, waiting for permission. Nothing in life is permanent, neither the climbs nor the mountaintops. So while you climb, remind yourself of its impermanence. Evolve into what you could be. That person you must be.
