Who are Miss Ally and Jessie and why are they on the ZM podcast?
Show requested, so here it is. As long as you've got da da da da.
It's ZM's Brian Clint Podcast.
It's very exciting for us. Not only are we about to get a live performance in studio, I feel like this is our Simon Cowell moment. I feel like we might be uncovering a future superstar.
I know, we might be uncovering the next Lord.
Might have seen these guys on TikTok or Instagram under the handle Mum and Me Busking. Please welcome to the studio Jesse and Ellie Matthews. Hi guys. Hi
guys. Thanks for making the trip. Are you taking did you take half the day off school, Miss Allie? Yes, I did. Lucky you, is it worth it?
Yeah. Yeah.
Of course.
How old are you, Allie? I'm
nine.
You're nine? Yeah.
How did Miss Ally and Jessie start busking together and what’s their background?
And we don't ask Mum how old she is. That's rude.
How old's mum then, I'll ask.
Mum's forty seven.
Forty seven, so forty seven. You and you guys are a duo. You go around New Zealand busking, is that right?
Yeah.
Yep, we have been. How long have you been doing
this for, guys?
I think
it's been around like four months now. It's been since Christmas last year. So what are we in? About nine months. Give or take.
Do you love it? Do you love performing live, Ellie?
Yes, I do.
What do you love about it?
I love seeing all the people and how they watch me and their reactions when I'm singing.
You're a very, very good singer. Such a good singer.
What do Ellie and Miss Ally love most about performing live on the street?
Have you had lessons or are you just naturally a very good singer?
Well, I have had lessons from my mum and my auntie Georgie.
Okay. And um, Jesse, this is a passion of yours. You're you're a singer and you said this kind of reignited the passion for singing for you.
Yeah, it did. I mean I'm still playing now, but I s actually started off busking like Ellie did when I was about twelve on the streets with my dad, my brother and social media though, so and then yeah, just singing with Ellie now it's been amazing. I was like my inner child's popped back out.
How cool is it for you to share this with your uh incredibly talented daughter?
It's just an absolute joy to be honest. I mean so much fun. I'll stay around for as long as she'll have mum I was gonna say do you know that it's okay when she doesn't as well. I g I know
but but do you love being in a band with your mum, Miss Ellie?
Yes, I really do. I always need someone in the background.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. All the superstars do. Oh
and you
You are giving the stars main character energy. I love it. You guys were just talking about um different things that people have given you when you're busking on the streets. What are some of the things you've been given?
What funny or unexpected gifts have they received from passers‑by while busking?
I got a half eaten pack of chewing gum.
Sick.
Um, two I think they were nerd ropes that had been like stuck. Some lollies. Some nerd ropes, yeah, yeah. I got some lollies that looked like they were from China.
Okay, right.
And I got a pair of handmade nails.
And
you were saying
some fifty dollar
notes one time. Yeah, well people are really, really generous. And I we know that times are tough, so we're not expecting people to do that, but we'll just enjoy the music really and us have fun. But people have been so generous. We've had quite a few laundromat coins as well. Yeah,
laundromat coins. Yeah. We got
some different money from different countries.
Caramel corns. The world's your oyster, you never know what you're gonna get. And now you're here to perform live on the radio. Have you ever done this before?
No. Okay.
Why is their live radio performance of Olivia Dean’s “Man I Need” special for them?
This is the first time can I say that um Ali has performed in headphones. So you're wearing headphones, so you're getting used to that. But you're a natural talent. We just saw you guys practicing. I'm so excited for this. What song are you guys gonna be singing for us this afternoon?
We're singing B. Man I Need.
Olivia Dean.
One of your favourites?
Definitely. Yes. I love Olivia Dean. She's
incredible, isn't she? Hopefully
we put this online and she sees it maybe. Yes. Who knows?
We
should tag her. Yeah. Okay. Are you ready to do this?
Yes.
How did the audience react to their in‑studio performance and what feedback did they get?
Okay, okay. This is a ZM exclusive. Okay, this is the first time mum and me basking performing live on the radio. Nine year old Allie and her mum are gonna perform Olivia Dean for us.
