מלחמת הקוממיות נמשכה כשנה וחצי החל מ 30 בנובמבר 47 עד הסכמי שביתת הנשק שנחתמו ברודוס בפרק הזמן שבין פברואר- יולי 49. המלחמה פרצה יום לאחר הכרזת האו"ם על תכנית החלוקה. בהסכמי שביתת הנשק הנציחו ארצות ערב את בעיית פליטי ארץ ישראל כבעיה בלתי פתורה. במשך עשרות שנים ביקשו מדינות ערב לעשות באמצעותם כלי להסברת עמדתם העויינת לישראל.
