Gary Fields is an historical geographer and a professor in the Department of Communication at the University of California, San Diego where he has been teaching and doing research for 23 years. He has a Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning with specializations in economic history and historical geography from the University of California, Berkeley. Fields’ research focuses comparatively on land conflict and dispossession with an emphasis on Palestine. His book, Enclosure: Palestinian Landscapes in a Historical Mirror was a finalist for the Palestine Book Awards in 2018. Fields has twice been a fellow for the Palestinian American Research Center (PARC) most recently in 2023-24. In addition to his academic research, Gary Fields is an engaged scholar writing opinion pieces for broad audiences in the U.S. media along with articles in venues such as Jadaliyya and Counterpunch. His new book in progress is entitled, Imprisoned: Voices and Images from Confinement Landscapes in Palestine.
