鸡场街的历史可以追溯到600年前，是郑和下西洋时候的驻节地，也是当年华人下南洋的重要集散地之一。然而，这条文化街作为观光地的正式成型，其实是近几十年的事情。直到21世纪初，这里才被精心地改造为如今的文化地标，鸡场街所在的马六甲历史城区，于2008年被联合国教科文组织列为世界文化遗产。
