He is particularly interested in how humans perceive art and creativity and focuses on researching methods to augment or simulate these processes using machines. Klingemann is considered a pioneer in the fields of AI art, neural networks, and machine learning. Klingemann has collaborated with prestigious institutions such as the British Library, Cardiff University, and the New York Public Library. He has also been selected as a Google Arts & Culture Resident Artist. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Photographers' Gallery in London, the ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe in Germany, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. In 2016, he won the British Library Labs Artistic Award. In 2018, he won the Lumen Prize Gold Award, which honors artworks created using technology. In 2020, he received an Honorary Mention at the Prix Ars Electronica. His installation work Memories of Passersby I made history in March 2019, becoming the first autonomous AI machine to be successfully auctioned at Sotheby's.
