1905年爱因斯坦提出相对论之后的几年里,相对论并不像现在有狭义和广义之分,人们只是称之为相对论。但是后来,人们开始认识到这个理论只涉及到恒定速度运动的参考系,这就限制了理论的适用范围,似乎有些狭隘,这个狭义相对论是无法处理有加速度存在的参考系的问题的。另外,由于牛顿的万有引力被认为是瞬间作用于受引力的物体之上的,可以不考虑物体之间距离有多远,而这一经典引力观违反了狭义相对论的原则,任何力的传递速度都不可能比光速更快。由此可见,狭义相对论既不能描述加速运动中的物体,也无法描述受到牛顿万有引力作用的物体。
