Okay, good morning everybody. Good morning. This is a Broward County Board of County Commissioners meeting of Tuesday, October 7th, 2025. If you would please rise for the Pledge of Allegiance. And Vinny, if you would please lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.
Thank you. If you'd remain standing, please. It's customary that we observe a moment of silence in honor of notable persons from our community who have recently passed. We'll start with Commissioner Davis. The wife of Senator Christopher Smith, Desiree Giles Smith, and I'm sure Hazel is going to say something, but a friend of this community, born and raised in her work. speaks for itself, and it will live long, long after the burial and the memory
of her life of celebration. Wonderful, wonderful person.
But I must say, we all need to take time out for ourselves. Get checked. Commissioner Bogan talks about the Hart deal, but it goes over and beyond. Even today, pink for awareness. Even today, purple for Alzheimer's. Even today, as we celebrate having the owners of the Panthers here, education, health, health, you must examine your body each and every day. In July, she discovered she had pancreatic cancer. And in September, She was gone in her memory. We love you.
Thank you, Commissioner. Again, just constant prayers for Christmas family.
This is the two-year anniversary of October 7th, and I just think it's important that we keep in our prayers all of the people that lost their lives, and we hope and pray that our hostages come home soon. I know the Federation did a big event Sunday. I was there representing the Commission at the Federation. It was great. I got to see Bertha and Bobby. They were there, too, so it was cool to hang out with them. But on October 7th, I think we need to remember this somber day and stand for peace and for love and for moving forward in unity. Senator Geller? I was also going to mention October 7th, and I have planted through Jewish National Fund planted trees in Israel in memory of Desiree Smith.
That's special. Good morning, everyone. Just wanted to add to our comments about former past city manager Desiree Giles Smith. And just to say she was just awesome. She knew what she was doing. She ran that city well. And she knows how to collaborate. She knows how to come to Tallahassee and get whatever there is for her city. And so she will be missed, but I will miss her most because she was humorous. She had that peace and that love and affection for people, but don't take that quiet smile. meaning weakness. She can be strong and she was strong to lead Lord of Hill. So I just wanted to add that to all of the discussion. She was a really special, special lady. So thank you, Mr. Mayor. Okay, there's one more.
Marjorie Loretta Walters, a strong community advocate, strong Kiwanian, and you know Kiwanis is all about service, so you know she was all about our children, and she has invested in our children, in our community, and we just know she too will be missed. Gone too soon is what we say for both of them. Thank you.
Okay. And amen to all those. And just a thought to Jane Goodall, who made us think and see the world in a whole different way that we probably wouldn't have. With that, if we could have a moment of silence.
Thank you. If you'd take your seat. I want to welcome everybody to the meeting today. At the last meeting, we passed a budget and millage rate, but the pace isn't slowing down at all. I hope the residents in our community watched the budget process and saw the transparency and efforts to lead in an innovative way. The music today was selected by Commissioner Davis.
