What memorials and acknowledgements open the County Commission meeting?
Good morning, everybody. This is recording. Good morning, everybody. Welcome to the Board of County Commissioner meeting. Today is March 3rd, 2026. And I'd like to ask everybody to please rise for the Pledge of Allegiance and please remain standing afterwards. And I'm going to ask Commissioner Davis to lead us in our Pledge of Allegiance.
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Please remain standing. Ladies and gentlemen, it's customary that we observe a moment of silence in honor of notable persons from our community who have recently passed. I'm going to ask our colleagues to go down the dais to recognize anybody and start with Commissioner Rogers. Thank you, everyone, for afternoon. Let me thank you, Attorney. I just wanted to acknowledge Sue Gunsberger, former commissioner. I know everyone will have something to say, but my experience, because I'm now celebrating 30 years as Mr. Mayor, I remember in 1998 when I lost by two votes and I needed to talk to the county commissioners about hanging Chad and dimple Chad before Al Gore, before Al Gore.
He brought it to light. And when I came to the county commission, the only person that would talk to me
was that Commissioner, Sue Gunsberger. So every time there's an anniversary, I always remember her. So may her soul rest in peace.
And the only reason I was not at her event, a family member very close ended up in Cleveland killing it at 6 o'clock this morning. So God spared, add you canceled meeting for Sue, but for me it was to be able to be with my family this morning. Just wanted to let her family know that. And, of course, there's a fire rescue department of Sunrise. They're struggling with the loss of a friend, and his name is Captain Christopher Benemiro, and just wanted them to know that he lived a good life. They know that. and he's a member of the Florida Fire Rescue Community. He was loved and cherished by many people, including his parents, Robert, Bob, of course, and Joanna Clemente, his brother, Craig, his wife, Meredith, his children, Madison, Ian, and Alex.
He leaves behind a legacy of service, mentorship, and brotherhood. That's how I met him. during this mentorship program.
So just wanted to bring that forward today. Thank you.
Thank you. Senator Geller? Thank you, Mr. Mayor. I was also at the Sue Gunsburger funeral this morning and would have a lot to say. But since I think we all will, I'm going to yield my time to Commissioner Furr, who I'm sure will be doing the keynote on Sue. Commissioner Fisher? My two mayors, you know that we were there together and with Commissioner Furr and Just at the end of the day, to listen to the children and grandchildren is really what Sue Gunsberg was all about, but I'll yield to you. Okay. Yeah, we have just lost somebody who has been a giant in this county. We can only hope to be as effective as she was. The things that she did for this county... When you think of the ethics reform that we all go by, the Children's Services Council, all kind of environmental issues that you championed.
All of North Beach Park, that whole park, hers was a deciding vote to save all of that. For us in Hollywood, she has been a giant. She started off as a teacher, she's a social worker. And she was tough. She was one tough politician. She knew how to get things done. But she was tough, but she always had a soft spot for those that needed her help. But I do remember one time she put me on the planning council and put me on there for a couple years. And then she thought I was going to vote the wrong way one time. She called me that morning, thank you for your service. And that was it. That was it. She said, you're gone. And so I understand, you know, if she wants to win something, yeah, just go on, you're gone.
But later, I will always appreciate her calling me.
and asking me to take her place here.
So, just remember her for all she's done. The world's better place calls her.
Obviously, Id also express my condolences to the Gunsburger family in this difficult time. I also want toI know youll probably mention it later, too, but I want to keep in our prayers our valiant soldiers of the American military and of the IDF who are doing yeomans work in trying to make the world a safer place.
