Good afternoon everybody and welcome to the City Commission meeting conference meeting this April second, twenty twenty four. Thank you for all for being here today. Uh we're here at the fabulous NSU Art Museum. Once again I want to thank the Art Museum for uh helping to accommodate the city commission and the community with its meeting today. So um we have a lot of exciting things to talk about this afternoon and uh so we might as well get started. Um but we'll begin with the communications to the city commission. We have one communication from the uh education advisory board. Is there a representative from the education advisory board here to talk with us? Susan? Is Susan Grant here?
Actually, um Susan is out ill today.
Oh she is I'm sorry. Oh I'm sorry to hear that. Okay. Um Uh is there any is the chair, Suzanne Dean,
here? She's not here either. But but I could I could share some details. Uh Mr. Okay, please do. Uh and IT, can you uh adjust the volume I'm hearing echo? So good afternoon, Mayor, Vice Mayor, Commissioners. Um the Education Advisory Board uh wanted just to make sure that we were on track with hiring a chief education officer. That is on track. We've had over a hundred applicants. Right now, um it it the interview process is being finalized, so we should have a Um a selection very soon. And on top of that, uh we are expected to have an update from the school board um to come and talk about um some of their strategies uh with the schools and we're expected we're expecting that they are going to come um either second meeting in April, the next one, or um sometime in May.
So um those were some of the updates I wanted to share with you all.

So Greg, um The role of the chief education officer that was formerly filled by Zoe was a new one. This is not something that the city has ever had in its history before. Um Help me understand why this position is really necessary, the value that it adds, um, and what differentiates it from the relationship that I have directly with school board members and with the district superintendent. So I I So I
John, let me ha let me um because Greg wasn't here when we first started it, and um and maybe we can give Greg direction as to what we're looking for here. But um I was part of the when I I was um I was I was mayor at the time and uh Chris Lagerbloom was our city manager. And one of the one of the things we were trying to accomplish was to see how we could assist the school board with Mr. Mayor, Mr.
Mayor. I'm sorry. Can you speak into the mic a little bit better? I'm sorry. Thank you.
How we could assist the school board in after school programs because uh for example, we were s we were starting to see an increase in juvenile delinquency in our city and the crime rate was was uh was on was uh at a a level that a number of the neighborhood associations were complaining to us saying what can we do with kids that come home t with where no parents are at school or where at home And we're trying to find ways to engage kids in after school programs. When we when we approached the school board to see what their uh priorities were, they w they had indicated that they didn't necessarily have the the um the budget or the the bandwidth so to speak to fully accommodate what the city was looking for.
So that began the conversation. And then we continued to think about other ways that we can expand upon the the learning experience of of kids that go to Fort Lawrence Hill schools and it it morphed into a a much larger role and certainly um uh Zoe uh took it upon herself and created wonderful initiatives to help us not just with um after school programs but also when we decided to partner with the school board on parks and recreation, how how and she shepherd shepherded some of those projects where we we uh um invested some of our park bond money in on school grounds.
