As you will recall, the purpose of the Fire Committee from november first, twenty twenty two was to provide the Commission and the community driven feedback to forecast and support public safety as well as future planning for the fire rescue's growth and a review of the industrial standards and performance measured within the national standards of the fire community. before you in your packet was a The five recommendations from our advisory committee. Uh, we've spent many hours. Listening was uh fire rescue personnel gaining knowledge of the whole fire rescue locations of fire stations, response times. One of the major cries of the community was the response times in our community that sometimes were approaching ten and eleven minutes.
It was a multi it's we learned that quickly. It it's just not one. prob uh the problem is just not with communications. And some people suggested that Fort Lauderdale fire rescue And public safety is as a whole take back or dispatch center. And y and I will talk about that in in just a second, uh what our findings, our feelings are. But um one of the first bullet points I wanna thank the committee. Uh they put a lot of time, expertise in this and also fire rescue staff, so they are to be commended for that. As before you today are the five recommendations, just kind of to plant ideas and future growth and strategic thinking. for this commission and future commissions. These can't all be accomplished within
the next few months. This is at least a five year progressive strategic. Process. The first one, the committee wants to make sure that we continue to implement the three person Rescue staffing model. Uh each year in the budget, uh last year's budget. Uh we we did additional two rescues and that started several years ago, then it took a pause. We are truly in the com the the committee sees this, we are behind the curve. Currently There's a hundred and thirty four rescues in the entire county. Out of those hundred and thirty four, thirty-five Or not staffed at three. Of those thirty five in the county. Over one third of those are here in this Fort Lauderdale, city of Fort Lauderdale. And that's falling way below the curve in overall industry standards in the majority of the county, as you can see.
So we encourage this Commission. in this budget process to continue on that track of doing two a year, even though we might get a safer grant and be able to expedite that sooner, but we won't know until later in the year. So we can't continue to fall behind the curve on that staffing model. Um one of the other things, as I mentioned, the regional communications center. What we learned was there's there's different components. There's the time the call goes in until the call the time the call answers. It's the time that the call taker spends on that call. Getting the information. Then it's the time there's a time frame where the call goes out to the responding district or station, and then it's the response time from
The equipment going, getting personnel getting on the equipment. going out to the call, but in order to get to the call then they have to deal with traffic. So one of the things that has improved dramatically is in the regional communication system and the response time of personnel getting out the door. F uh t under the chief's leadership. and his assistant chiefs, they have taken that time, spent a lot of time with the County Fire Chiefs Association working with Broward County Sheriff Dispatch, a regional dispatch center, the county adding extra personnel has reduced that call taking time. We've seen those decreases in the time. We have not it it's almost hard and it's out of their control fire rescue is the traffic and re the time when the apparatus
Rescue goes out the door to get to the scene if they get caught by train derail or not derail must but train uh interference. Uh you know, when you bridges being open. The intercoastal things of this nature are special events.
