Um and uh I know you all want to get out to your your bo your boats and your pools this afternoon 'cause it's beautiful weather, so we'll try to get through this as soon as we can. Um we start out with our communications to the city commission and there are two communications, one from the planning and zoning department. Hello, Doctor. One from the Planning and Zoning Department uh regarding a motion made by Marilyn Mamano and seconded by Jay Scheckman. And uh this concerns um Regarding the tree preservation ordinance. Does someone from staff want to uh step forward and explain a little bit about that to us?

Alabal development services. So uh at the same meeting in which the uh planning and zoning board uh approved um the planning and the uh tree preservation ordinance amendments that we are have on the agenda this evening, they also Um made a communication to the commission commission for two reasons. One, to have this particular item be on the next available agenda. It is on tonight's agenda. One of the other elements of the conversation with was around the aspect of incentives, particularly preservation incentives and incentives with respect to development. And so we have included some level of incentives in the document that you have this. evening uh we'll let you know there's some disagreement between staff and the advisory group that we've been working with on that particular aspect and we're willing to continue to work on that item but at this point what we've presented is staff's best effort and I think that's part of the communication as well.
So when you say incentives you mean like fines if people take down trees that they're not supposed to or what do you mean by
incentives? Planting incentives, incentives to incentives that would induce more preservation or uh hopefully allow for developers to save more trees on development sites. So uh one of them in particular is uh giving credit or value uh type of credit with respect to types of trees on site. So if a developer was able to save an old growth tree, a large old growth tree, we'd be able to reduce the the proposal offered by the advisory group was to have a deeper insight. with respect to how many trees would have to be replanted on the site. So in some respects, um staff is not in full agreement with that approach in full, but we do provide some incentives that we think get closer to what we're trying to do from a preservation of tree canopy standpoint.
And also one of the fundamental reasons why we're uh not willing to go as far in terms of the aggressive nature or at least how aggressive you can go with incentives at this point is that as you may remember uh mayor and the commission there is an a um uh urban floristy master plan effort underway uh we believe the results of that particular effort will also provide us some opportunity to properly prescribe incentives um and we think doing so before that particular project is done would be a little bit premature.
