What happens at the beginning of the City Commission meeting?
Good evening, everybody, and welcome to the City Commission meeting this January 9, 2024. Thank you for uh coming to attend. We're here in this beautiful Parker. renovated and restored and uh once again we're here to have a meeting with uh number of uh important items tonight. So uh we'll s begin the process. For those of you who are here for the first time, we begin our meetings with a pledge of allegiance and a moment of silence and then we go into the agenda at which time we will uh ask members of the commission if there are any items they'd like to pull from the agenda that are part of the consent agenda. If a person if anyone from the commission pulls that item, we'll discuss that and vote on it separately.
And uh and if that item has not been pulled, we invite you to speak beforehand and uh we'll vote on that separately as well. And before we get to that, we have various presentations, and tonight we have three presentations uh recognizing individuals or uh entities that are important to our community. community this uh particular month. So let us begin. I ask you all please join me r to stand and join me in the Pledge of Allegiance. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Thank you. Please be seated. Mm. We had two people in our community who have whose passing this past uh week has been really um
left an indelible mark in our in our community. Rene uh Corbell Quinn and Gil DeFerron, uh two people whose uh faces have been uh uh uh very familiar for many, many years. And let us all take a moment and uh have a moment of silence in them in memory of them.

Here. Uh we have a few agenda announcements. R four is being moved to the public hearing section of the agenda, so that'll now be considered a public hearing. Um and changes. M six, the city manager is asked to that that item be removed from the agenda. And NP three uh also removed from the agenda. The speaker is asked to uh present that in February. Um so except for those items which are now modifications, do we have um on motion to approve the minutes and the agenda as amended? So moved. Do I hear a second? Second. It's been moved and seconded. Yes, and the minutes have been approved as well as the agenda as uh as modified. So let us begin with the presentations tonight. Uh I'd like to invite Commissioner Sturman to begin the process with the first presentation, which will be a proclamation recognizing the emergency volunteer project and fire rescue personnel for their selfless dedication to service. I'd like to invite uh Fort L'Oreal Captain Jason Friedman and Miami Beach. firefighter Carlos Lange to the podium. Please join us down here at the front of the state.

We have two of these. Uh our second one is being well this one needs to be repaired too. The little or we could tighten it a little bit. But before I
even begin, I just want to uh take a moment to recognize Carlos um in addition to what he's done here. Uh during the floods in April he uh he volunteered to work with me. We had a volunteer organization working with uh Red Cross, uh United Way Salvation Army, and he was there every single day on conference calls, heading up operations. Uh witho blinking, he came out and helped the community. He was uh absolutely fantastic. in um in helping our Edgewood neighbors as well as reverts. I'm gonna start in a second, but if you want to give a round of applause, I I won't stop you. And a neighbor of mine too. The proclamation. Whereas The City of Fort Lauderdale takes immense pride in recognizing the exemplary service and dedication of Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Captain Jason Friedman and Miami Beach firefighter Carlos Lang, who have demonstrated exceptional courage, commitment and compassion in the face of unprecedented challenges in the embattled State of Israel.
