Started with the uh the transportation and land use committee meeting. I'd like to call to order the December eighteenth, twenty twenty three transportation and land use committee meeting. Please see the clerk to request one. Um I always start off with a little piece of trivia and uh useless information. This is not so useless since it's in the news. I'll explain what you're hearing when you in the news. A lot of discussion about dropping dumb bombs in the Gaza Strip. A dumb bomb is a non-laser guided bomb. A laser guided bomb is a five hundred pound or two thousand pound bomb that has a guidance package that sees the laser beam on the nose and it's got a set of fins on the back so it can fly to where the laser beam is.

Um it's very precise. Generally speaking, if you drop a laser guided bomb from altitude with energy, fifteen, twenty thousand feet, so it's constantly accelerating as it drops, you can hit your pinpoint target with plus or minus ten feet. A dumb bomb is simply a Mark eighty two or Mark eighty four, either five hundred pound or two thousand pound bomb, and it's just that. It has no guidance package on at all. It's a piece of iron and a bunch of explosive tritonol inside of it. And when you drop it off the airplane, it goes where it's going. You can't guide it at all. In the more advanced systems like the F-16s, like the Israelis have, they have what's called a continuously computing impact point. And on its heads-up display, it shows a little airplane, it shows a line, and shows what's the the CCIP is a dot at the bottom of that line.

And what it's saying is based on the computer calculations, if you drop a bomb, at this moment it will hit that dot where the dot was when you dropped that bomb. The problem with unguided munitions is If you're dropping a string of six, that string might be three hundred feet long. So you'll have a five hundred pound bomb every sixty, seventy feet in that string. You could also drop at salvo where you just drop them all, but then they'll disperse as they fall. I don't think I ever saw a single scenario in twenty four years in the Air Force and eleven years flying fighters where we were to employ unguided munitions in a urban civilian populated area. I never saw that scenario. We never planned for that scenario and I never saw it.
