It was very disturbing.
The title is The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum.
They describe it as a horror novel.
And I think the only reason why it's described as a horror novel is because it's like a car crash you can't look away from.
And essentially...
It follows these teenagers.
One particular teenager, Dave, is our narrator.
And David witnesses the gradual, brutal abuse of a girl who moved in next door, Meg Laughlin.
And Meg is left in the care, her and her sister, of their aunt, who is quite deranged and unhinged.
And there's a lot that goes on in this neighborhood with the children, with the girl, with the adults.
There's a lot of abuse.
It is really not for the faint of heart.
Psychological torture.
There is just so much that happens in particularly in the one home, but also just around the neighborhood.
And it's very unsettling.
I think the reason that it still sticks with me is because it's so unsettling.
Like I go through my Goodreads and I'm like this book, this book, this book.
And then I got to this title and I'm like, oh my, yeah, that takes me back.
