Well, Donald Trump has pressured the Texas Republicans to do this extremely incendiary act.
It has been done before in Texas, so it's not completely out of historical norms, but it has infuriated Republicans.
Texas Democrats, but it's also infuriated national Democrats.
And so I think it's fairly easy to say this is the most important story in American politics.
And Democrats for the first time have said we're going to respond in kind.
We're going to do this, too.
And so we have an escalating, basically political war happening in America right now.
So, first of all, you have the issue that these maps in 2021, Texas specifically, but
If states have the power to do this and it's not in an independent commission, there's been a bit of a trend to be aggressive, but not too aggressive.
You want to have some padding room if you have control over the process so that if a wave comes in, your members can withstand that.
And Donald Trump has basically said to Texas, we don't care.
We're going to do this in what could be a wave year.
This is the way we're going to save the house.
The other thing is, this is the unseen part of it.
Redistricting is impossible to do cleanly.
You can't surgically go in and make some changes and have it not affect other members.
So you've got Republicans in Texas who now have completely new Republican constituents in their primary and they're vulnerable there.
And so redistricting is the most personal, powerful force and a member of Congress's life.
And this is members are being jeopardized.
They're being pitted against each other, sometimes in their own party, sometimes individually.
