I was literally doing five things at once and only one of them would work out in that moment. And I'd be like, all right, all my chips on this thing. Right. So like. When I transitioned to documentary, I had a stack of documentaries I wanted to make after Vice, right? But I was getting no traction for any of those, couldn't sell anything.
And so, you know, but then I ended up co-writing a script with Ben Sinclair. And I was like, okay, well, there's an opportunity. That's work, right? It's like, it's something. Because all I can do is this creative shit. I don't have any, you know, I can write, basically. I don't have any other skills, right?
So it's like I have to do one of these things. And I'm literally just following the, you know, I'm following the opportunity, the diminishing opportunities.
One's a TV series. That is too real.
Yeah. That is perfect. Yes, yes, exactly. And it is like, you know, I think also that your dream for what I'm going to try to keep going with the egg thing, but your dream for what you will finally make with that egg. Right. The whole time you're like, I'm going to make scrambled eggs. Right. But then when you get to it, they're like, it's going to be an omelet.
And you have to sort of change your dream. And you have to be like, I wanted an omelet the whole time. Give me the fucking omelet, right? And it's like that part of it, right? I think like it is incredibly important, I think, as a creative in the world today. Because like, you know, you will really... Like, you have to keep changing your dream.
It's not like, I'm sure there's people who are like, when they're five years old, they're like, you know, I love snails. And then they become a snail scientist and they're fucking, and they discover new types of snails. And they're like, this guy was like, from day one, he was the snail guy. Everybody knew it. They were like, he's going to fucking change, right?
I think it's much more like, you know, I was like, I'm going to be a journalist. Yes, that's right. I'm going to be a journalist. I'm going to interview people and I'm going to do whatever. And then someone was like, okay, there's no, you're not going to make money doing that. But here you can like, you know, be a website content creator. And I was like, yes.
I'm going to be a website content creator. I'm going to make all kinds of stuff. And they're like, all right, well, never mind that. All right. Things have changed. Now it's this. Here, write a screenplay. And I'm like, yes, I'm going to be a screenwriter. You know what I mean? You just keep changing the dream. And that has to happen for the rest of your life.
There is definitely a price that if some, you know, huge studio came up to me and was like, you know what? We want you to be a development executive for this much money. There's a certain amount of money. There's a certain amount of money. I'd be like, okay, sure. I'm a development executive now. Now I'm on this thing. And I was a development executive after my first show for Vice failed.
And I stopped coming in. And then I got a call from some whatever, whoever was the head of shit at the time. They were like, yo, you're still on the payroll. Get your fucking ass back in here. And I was like, what do you want me to do? And he was like, you're a development producer.
That was my dream. Yeah, the payoff is that, right? And I think that that is, you know, to me, Deli Boys season one, I was talking to Michelle Nader, the showrunner, you know, yesterday about this. And, you know, we were both like, yo, this is everything we wanted. That's exactly what we wanted to make. Season one of Deli Boys, like, I don't know what the future holds.
All I know is that we made something that we really stand by, right? Yeah. And when the moment it came out, I really felt, you know, like I sort of crassly put it like it was like taking like a giant shit. Right. And just suddenly you're like, oh, but I guess it was probably more like giving birth.
It's like Frank, like my cat.
