Collaboration and communication should not be gymnastics.

We should judge our ideas on their content, not the style of speech or the kind of person who's bringing it to the table.

But we haven't succeeded in changing that reality yet.

Well, I've become a fan of confident humility.

And when I think about confident humility, it's being secure enough in your strengths to acknowledge your shortcomings.

It's being comfortable enough with your knowledge to admit what you don't know.

And when I think about the women who really have mastered it, oftentimes you see it when they're in a position of power and they've, quote unquote, proven themselves.

And so there's less to lose in their minds by showing humility.

And so you'll see Jacinda Ardern in the early days of the pandemic saying, we don't know how to fight this yet.

And so I'm going to be following the science and evolving in real time.

That's the kind of message I would love to hear from more leaders.

You see in some of the work that I did at the Gates Foundation, Melinda Gates actually reading constructive criticism from her team out loud in front of a large number of employees.

And I will never forget this.

We did it in the style of Jimmy Kimmel's mean tweets.

So you know how you've seen celebrities read nasty online comments about themselves out loud?

I said to the leadership team of the Gates Foundation, this is a way of showing confidence and humility.

Let's try it with the feedback that you get.

And to her credit, Melinda volunteered to go first.

She raised her hand.

And I'll never forget her team handing her a stack of cards with comments she'd never seen before.
