And she reads the first one and it says, Melinda is like Mary effing Poppins, practically perfect in every way.

she bursts out laughing and she says, I am so not perfect.

And then she starts listing all of her imperfections.

Well, I turned that into a randomized controlled experiment.

Some employees at the foundation get to see her engage with those comments.

Others get to hear her talk about the culture she wants to build without role modeling it personally.

And then there's a third group that's a pure control group.

Three months later, only the first group is bringing more ideas and suggestions to the table, not just to her, but to leadership across the board.

And

I think what she's doing is she's saying, look, I take my job seriously, but I don't take my ego too seriously.

And that's such an important message to send.

With a former student, Konstantinos Koutifris, we actually studied whether leaders at lower levels could do this.

So we randomly assigned managers and supervisors to have a meeting with their teams.

And some of them we said, just ask for constructive criticism.

And others we said, critique yourself out loud.

And that second group, a year later, had created a stronger culture of voice and openness in their teams.

They had more psychological safety.

People were more willing to bring them concerns and also suggestions and solutions.

And I think that if you just ask people for constructive criticism, you don't really know what to make of that.
