I've always thought about it as the optimal state of engagement, just as Mihai Chicksenthai first described it when he coined the term. matched

And you really push me to think again because you question whether in fact flow is the ideal state when we're using technology. matched

Something has always puzzled me though about flow, which is matched

Mihai was very clear in his original theory that challenge is important. matched

But he presented data suggesting that most of us find flow when driving on the freeway. matched

regularly, which is not a challenging task most of the time that you're doing it. matched

I've also I've read, I think about Ryan Quinn's research, for example, on flow and conversation, that a lot of people find flow talking about issues that, you know, might be interesting to them, but the conversation isn't necessarily intellectually taxing. matched

It's not demanding. matched

It's not challenging in the traditional sense. matched

And so that has led me to wonder: is challenge actually necessary for flow? matched

Why? matched

Is it because the absorption is deeper? matched

Fair. matched

Yeah, I think there's an element of goal orientation. matched

That the task has a purpose as opposed to it's just fun. matched
