Is that just protecting late afternoons? matched

Well, okay, so this goes to the popular idea of the digital detox. matched

I think the most interesting paper I've read on this in the last few years is one I'm sure you've come across. matched

It was an experiment by Julia Brylovskaya and colleagues where they compare digital abstinence with digital moderation, effectively. matched

And I think the gist of the experiment for our listeners who aren't familiar is one group of hundreds of people is randomly assigned to take a a seven day total matched

refrain from social media and smartphone use and just cut off cold turkey. matched

Then there's another group that's just asked to decrease their smartphone use by one hour a day. matched

And four months later, the moderation group is happier, less depressed, less anxious, and even leads a healthier lifestyle. matched

They're less likely to smoke, for example, than the abstinence group. matched

And so I came away from that thinking, okay, maybe we don't need to cut off cold turkey. matched

Maybe that just requires too much willpower for people. matched

And then they just revert back to their old habits after the detox. matched

Maybe smaller changes are more sustainable and that's where we should be focusing. matched
