And most people can't do it today.

The research says about 65% of American adults can't do that.

We're instead living in structures where we try to please people.

We try to run away from people.

We try to give hints.

We try to do nice things for them, hoping they'll read our mind and take care of us in return.

And that's why relationships aren't working.

So for the first 20 years of my life, I tried to play the games.

I did it wrong.

I disappointed myself and everybody around me.

And I found that other people were doing exactly the same.

So 20 years old, I said,

If this is all relationships are, I'm out.

I'm tired of this.

So instead, I'm going to do everything opposite of what I would normally do.

I'm going to see how that goes.

And it turns out it went really well.

I started just talking to people, being open about what I needed, saying no when I meant no and having boundaries and trying to build toward a larger purpose and being clear with people about how I felt.

And it turns out people like that.

And it's something called secure attachment.
