I think that that's right, except that I think we have to remember it's really crucial about aspiration that when you're mentoring yourself, the you that does the mentoring isn't in any better position than the you that's mentored, unlike the parent-child case.
So it isn't as though there's some special, secret, better part of you that fully grasps the value of classical music.
There is no such part.
And so the magic of it, in a way, is that you can do it without that element.
Yeah, except, I mean, look, I think when we try to decompose it in this way, it can be helpful, but it isn't exactly made up of these kinds of parts.
Like the whole thing, what we're describing is a learning process, right?
We're describing somebody who sees that they have something to learn and trying to learn that thing.
And really what I would say is that that's the basic case.
And you could understand parents and children and the parents' bribery of a child as a kind of funny, defective version of the learning process, right, I would tend to say.
And that we're not born able to aspire because we're born able to do almost nothing, right?
We can't even, we don't even have language, right?
So in a sense, your parents are kind of like a crutch that you need before you can start teaching yourself.
But the basic mechanics of the teaching process, I think, are like more paradigmatically intelligible in the aspiration case than in the parent-child case.
