It feels basically to me more like a soap opera or like pro wrestling than a game show at this point.
There's like,
It really warmed my heart to hear you, Sarah, talk about it as like your special show that you watch with Josh, because it does feel that it feels exactly like how some couples will watch the same soap opera for 30 years
no real reason other than that they have watched it for 20.
So you got to go another 10.
so much of the actual soap opera is a magic trick like it works literally like mentalism because obviously the editors know which name is in the envelope and then of course you cut the episode to highlight the tension that's gonna most satisfyingly resolve into the conclusion that you already know is gonna be there I mean this is why I think the wrestling analogy is a good one
Because there's a similar kind of fiction that everyone's participating.
And like wrestling, it's not fake all the way down.
There's real suffering going on there, just like there's real, you know, stunt work and wrestling moves going on in wrestling.
But like the main shape of the show is a facade.
And it's a facade that everyone's kind of knowingly winking at, I think.
It does make the show lean a lot more heavily on the soap opera than the game, because ultimately it's a really high-variance game.
And as you say, the best player will... Well, we've just spent some time talking about what even counts as the best player in a game like Survivor.
But the person with the most skills will not often be the person who wins.
And I imagine that the reason that the people who actually won Survivor don't have that much in common with each other...
I would imagine that if you looked at everybody across all the series who made it to the final five, say, that group would have a lot in common with one another.
Because the way the game ultimately works is that the last decision can turn on anything.
The risk is that that feels unfair as a game, but the show's strength is that it gets you so invested in the story that really the best player one doesn't feel like a huge consideration.
first
I saw some of it, but the most telling thing was the summaries that I watched were just amazing.
